Visbek brings together megalithic tombs near Engelmannsbäke, trails through the municipality and insights into local archaeology. For planning your trip, it is worth comparing the circular routes: their stated lengths range from 5.1 to 15.4 kilometres. There are also historic sites and guided activities.

Compare circular trails by distance

The 5.1-kilometre “Auenlandschaft” circular trail is in the northern part of the municipality. It leads from the Bullmühle car park through the “Bäken between Endeler and Holzhauser Heide” nature reserve. Its starting point, circular format and route give this trail a clear focus on the landscape.

The 7.8-kilometre “Kleine Visbeker Tour” starts either at the town hall or at the Heimathaus, Rechterfelder Straße 1. The designated 15.4-kilometre “Rund um die Endeler Heide” circular trail is another option; it is one of the longest in the district of Vechta. The three routes can therefore first be distinguished by their length. Check local notices if current trail conditions are important for your plans.

Megalithic culture near Engelmannsbäke

A section of the “Megalithic Culture Route” runs through the municipality of Visbek. Near Engelmannsbäke are the Visbeker Bräutigam and the Heidenopfertisch. The Visbeker Bräutigam is just over 100 metres long and is the largest megalithic tomb in Lower Saxony. Both monuments are considered the largest megalithic tombs in northern Germany.

Another way to learn about the monuments is “Der Hauch des Hünengeistes” (The Breath of the Giant’s Spirit): this evening torchlight tour takes place during the dark season and tells the story of the Heidenopfertisch and the Visbeker Bräutigam. Its seasonal schedule sets it apart from the circular trails, whose descriptions focus mainly on distance and route.

Church, monument and archaeology

Today’s Neo-Gothic St. Vitus Church stands in the centre of Visbek. It was built between 1872 and 1876 and is the seventh church on this site. The Abbot Gerbert Castus monument offers another perspective on local history: the 1984 bronze sculpture stands on Klosterplatz, on the north side of the parish church of St. Vitus in Visbek.

ArchäoVisbek offers insights into the archaeology and history of Visbek. On display are historical evidence and finds from major excavations carried out in recent years. Alongside the megalithic tombs, archaeological finds and the church’s architectural history therefore offer different topics to explore during a stay in Visbek.

Guided and virtual tours

Visbek’s local guides offer a range of tours through the municipality. Groups can arrange a customised tour by agreement, including in Low German if desired. A virtual guide also offers a tour of the municipality. Alongside the named circular trails, these guided and virtual formats provide other ways to explore Visbek.

Which themes you choose to focus on depends on whether you want to include the megalithic tombs, the archaeology and architectural history, or one of the circular trails of varying lengths in your travel plans.
