You can discover Jork through its local history and routes with different focuses. The historic “Changing Times in the Altes Land” walking tour is around 3.5 kilometres long and set up as a permanent open-air exhibition. The 25 information boards include QR code explanations in German and English. The tour takes you through historical topics, while the boards and digital explanations offer different ways to explore them.

Museum and church: history in two forms

The Altes Land Museum is housed in a magnificent Altländer half-timbered house. Since 1990, it has showcased the history of development and technology in the Altes Land, including the development of dike construction and drainage techniques. The exhibitions also cover shipping and fruit growing. The museum thus brings together architecture and various aspects of the region’s history.

Special exhibitions and classical concerts are regularly held on the upper floor. If you would like to include these in your plans, check the current programme before your visit. This lets you distinguish the museum’s permanent displays from events that may be taking place, without assuming fixed dates.

The brick church of St. Matthias stands on a Wurt: an artificially raised mound intended to protect against high water and storm surges. At 40 metres long and 14 metres wide, it is the largest church in the Altes Land. The organ façade also has its own historical detail: it bears the work of Arp Schnitger, and all the façade pipes have been preserved. The church building, the Wurt and the organ’s history each offer a different perspective on the town’s past.

Two routes, different lengths

The fruit-growing trail runs along Westerminnerweg in Jork and is around 1.5 kilometres long. This makes it shorter than the historic walking tour, which is around 3.5 kilometres long. The routes also differ in focus: as its name suggests, the fruit-growing trail is about fruit, while the walking tour offers historical information along a permanent open-air exhibition. When choosing between them, you can take both the distance and the subject matter into account.

Plan around the festival date and your journey

The Altländer Blossom Festival has been held in Jork every year on the first Saturday in May since 1981. The Altländer Blossom Queen is crowned at the festival. Check the date for the relevant year before travelling so you can plan your visit around your travel dates.

Jork can be reached from Buxtehude, for example, by bus routes 2030 or 2040. As timetables can change, check the current connection before setting off. This lets you plan your journey using the available bus routes without relying on an unverified timetable.
