Meerbeck combines an early settlement history with distinctive buildings, activities at Gallhof and trails through the surrounding area. In the town center stands St. Bartholomew’s Church; the village pond is next to a festival meadow, playground and boules court. This lets you tailor your stay to different interests, from church architecture to a farm shop and arts and crafts, as well as cycling routes and pilgrimage trails.

St. Bartholomew’s and the history of Meerbeck

Meerbeck was first mentioned in 1013. St. Bartholomew’s Church stands in the center of the town and was rebuilt between 1522 and 1525. The lower part of the tower and a Romanesque sandstone portal survive from the first church. These older features stand alongside later additions: Art Nouveau windows were added to the choir during a renovation in 1898/99. A late Gothic carved altarpiece is the centerpiece of the church. A sandstone cross has stood on its south side since 1980.

The building’s history can thus be told through several specific features: the surviving parts of the first church, its reconstruction in the 16th century and the windows added during the renovation around 1900. For a cultural-history break, St. Bartholomew’s offers a clear connection to the locality, while Meerbeck’s history reaches back to the early 11th century.

Gallhof: Manor house, farm shop and arts and crafts

The Gallhof manor house near Meerbeck is considered one of the region’s most notable half-timbered houses. It developed from a medieval moated castle belonging to the Counts of Schaumburg. Gallhof also has old oaks, lime trees and poplars, as well as an old barn. The manor house, trees and barn give the place its own historic and scenic character.

A farm shop at Gallhof sells homemade food under the “Gutes von Gallhof” brand. The products currently available may vary. Arts and crafts are also on offer, including bags, textiles, woodwork and photographic art. Alongside its architectural history, Gallhof therefore focuses on crafts and culinary offerings.

Music performances are held regularly at Gallhof. Chamber music is performed there by artists in an intimate setting; the Gallhof Ensemble comprises 13 trained singers. Its lineup and event program may change, so check the latest dates before your visit.

Village pond, Thingstätte and activities in Meerbeck-Volksdorf

The area around the village pond brings together a festival meadow, playground and boules court. These different facilities are located in the same area and offer a variety of ways to take a break in town. Public facilities may change, so if needed, check in advance what is currently available for use.

The Thingstätte is a shelter with a barbecue area that can be rented. If you would like to include it in your plans, check in advance whether it is currently available for hire. In the Meerbeck-Volksdorf area, Bad Hiddenserborn on the Mittelland Canal has a café and beer garden; there is also a small zoo on the grounds. Since these offerings may change, it is advisable to check availability before your visit.

Routes for cycling and walking trips

Circular Route 4.3 passes the Meerbecker Mill and St. Bartholomew’s Church. It reaches Meerbeck via a shared walking and cycling path. The described loop therefore connects two specific points of interest with a designated entrance to the town. The route and use of the path are practical planning considerations: before setting off, check the current route description and whether the path is accessible.

The West Loop includes Meerbeck. The route and surrounding settlements are described as rural, quiet and village-like; fields, woods and meadows are part of this landscape. Compared with Circular Route 4.3, which has named stops at the mill and church, the West Loop places greater emphasis on the character of the route and its surroundings. Depending on your interests, you can choose between a loop with specific waypoints and a tour with a broader focus on the landscape.
