Explore Visselhövede on walks and through tangible traces of its history: the Visselseen lakes are right in the town, while the Visselhof behind the local history museum brings together historic storehouses. The town is also situated on the western edge of the Lüneburg Heath. The lakes, historic buildings and a guided town tour offer different ways to make the most of your stay.

Walks around the Visselseen lakes

The Visselseen lakes are right in the middle of Visselhövede, just a short walk from the town centre. They’re ideal for walking, jogging and strolling. If you’d like to include exercise and local history in your plans, you can visit the lakes as a destination in their own right, alongside the historic buildings and a guided town tour. The town’s location on the western edge of the Lüneburg Heath provides another geographical point of reference for your stay.

Storehouses, local history museum and church

Behind the local history museum, the Visselhof comprises several historic storehouses. One of them is the Honigspeicher, or honey storehouse, from the village of Buchholz: in 2006, it was dismantled beam by beam, painstakingly restored and moved to its current location. Its history links its former site in Buchholz with the Visselhof. The Visselhof is also home to the Vorratsspeicher, a storehouse from the Harm-Becker-Hof farm in Visselhövede.

The local history museum itself also has a special place in the town’s history. It is one of the oldest houses on Visselhövede’s oldest street. After extensive building work and careful restoration, it was put to its present use in 1999. At the Visselhof, the focus is therefore both on the architectural history of individual storehouses and on how the museum building is used.

St. Johannis Church is built of fieldstones in the North German Brick Gothic style. Its freestanding bell tower has had its present form since 1799. Another historical landmark is the water tower on the site of the former Norddeutsches Honig- und Wachs-Werk (North German Honey and Wax Works). Built between 1896 and 1899, it initially supplied water to the works and the town.

If you’d like to discover local history not only through buildings but also through storytelling, you can plan a historical guided town tour. It takes participants back to Visselhövede around 1900. The guide, Almuth Quehl, portrays the innkeeper’s wife “Minna Dierks.” Separate arrangements can be made to book a tour.

This will help you plan your route and decide which local attractions you’d most like to focus on during your stay: walks around the Visselseen lakes, architectural history or the historical guided tour.
