The Hemslingen Moor lies north of Hemslingen in the district of Rotenburg (WĂĽmme). This nature reserve covers about 314 hectares and brings together different traces of how the landscape has been used: it consists of a drained raised bog that has been partly converted to grassland. Water retention is having an effect across larger areas, where peat mosses and cotton grass are growing.
Moor, Oak and Garden Around Hemslingen
The moor provides a distinctive natural feature to consider when planning your trip. Those interested in how moorland landscapes develop can find both areas that have been partly converted to grassland and areas where water retention is having an effect. Peat mosses and cotton grass are the plants mentioned here. The area lies north of Hemslingen and is distinct from the settlement itself.
Another local point of interest is the “Around Hemslingen” trail: a pedunculate oak with three trunks stands along it and has been protected as a monument since March 2022. Mekelburg Garden is in Söhlingen, a district of the municipality of Hemslingen. The 2,400-square-metre grounds feature a circular path, a pond with two streams and a pavilion, as well as masonry and stonework. The oak, the moorland and the garden’s landscaped features offer different points of interest—from a striking individual tree and moor vegetation to architectural details in the garden.
Bruchwiesenbad Hemslingen is an outdoor swimming pool. If you would like to include it in your plans, check seasonal opening information before visiting.
More Nature and Culture in the Wider Destination of Rotenburg
For a wider range of options, you can also explore the wider destination of Rotenburg. The district of Rotenburg (WĂĽmme) has 24 NORDPFADE trails, circular routes ranging from 5 to 32 kilometres. Their lengths can help you choose a route. The NORDPFAD Ostetal passes through a river landscape with dense floodplain forests, wet meadows, reed beds and steep slopes. Those interested in moorland landscapes will also find Tister Bauernmoor and Ekelmoor in the district: together, they form a 1,220-hectare nature reserve complex.
For cycling, the WĂĽmme Cycle Route comprises a northern route of about 125 kilometres and a southern route of about 135 kilometres. Connecting routes divide the trails into individual sections; they are also described as suitable for day trips and families.
Culture and history are also part of the wider destination. The Bachmann Museum is housed in Bremervörde’s oldest building, the last surviving building of Bremervörde Castle. The exhibition is currently closed for renovation. At the Sandbostel Camp Memorial, young people can take part in educational programmes focused on commemoration, remembrance and learning at the historic site.
Sandbostel is also a starting point for paddling trips on the Oste. The Oste can only be paddled when water levels are sufficiently high, so check conditions before planning a trip.
