Three self-guided walking tours, a late Romanesque collegiate church and a publicly accessible aviation exhibition reveal different sides of Wunstorf. The Aue meadows also shape the landscape, and the town is connected by rail and road. You can tailor your stay to exploring the town, experiencing its culture or taking in the landscape.

Old Town and walking tours

Wunstorf has three self-guided walking tours. Each starts and ends at the town hall and takes about 20 minutes. Two lead through the Old Town, while one goes up Stift Hill. Their approximate duration makes them clearly defined walking options; you can choose one of the Old Town routes or make Stift Hill your focus. The pedestrian zone combines historic charm with modern variety.

If you would rather explore Wunstorf as part of a guided tour, city tours take you through the historic town center and the restored Wasserzucht district, to the abbey, the Ratskeller and other attractions. City tours, tower climbs and special tours can be booked individually for groups, on dates of your choice. Confirm the arrangements before you arrive. The town hall walking tours and group options therefore differ both in how you explore and in how you plan.

Abbey and churches

The extensively renovated 15th-century abbey is Wunstorf’s cultural center. Its ground-floor hall hosts exhibitions, readings, concerts, receptions and lectures for up to 100 people. Together with the many renovated half-timbered houses on the Wasserzucht street in the town center, the abbey forms an ensemble with a distinctive character. The collegiate church is one of the most significant late Romanesque church buildings in Lower Saxony and offers another perspective on Wunstorf’s architectural history.

The town church on the market square is a separate site. It is open to visitors Tuesday through Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to noon. Opening hours may change, so check them before your visit. This lets you plan a church visit specifically, without treating it as one of the self-guided walking tours or a group tour.

Ju-52 Hall and aviation exhibition

The Traditionsgemeinschaft Lufttransport Wunstorf e.V. operates an exhibition of military history objects at the Ju-52 Hall and on the adjacent outdoor grounds, right next to Wunstorf Air Base. It is open to the public. The centerpiece is a Junkers Ju-52, one of the last examples in the world in its original condition. Together with the Lufttransportgeschwader 62 of the German Air Force, the exhibition presents an overview of the history of air transport and Wunstorf Air Base, as well as other aviation exhibits.

The Ju-52 Hall and outdoor areas are accessible without barriers. The interior of the Transall is an exception. If step-free access is important for your visit, take this distinction into account when planning. No visiting hours are provided here for the exhibition, so check in advance when a visit is possible.

The Aue and getting here

The Aue is a tributary of the Leine that flows through Wunstorf and shapes the landscape with its meadows. From Wunstorf, it is navigable year-round, with a few portage points. Water levels and safety conditions vary; check them before setting out. The Aue offers a different perspective on the town from the walking tours through the Old Town and town center, and the two need not be combined into a set route.

Wunstorf is accessible via the A 2 motorway, the B 441 and B 442 federal highways, and by rail. The town lies about 20 kilometers northwest of Hanover. Which connection suits you depends on your chosen mode of transport; the routes listed do not provide enough information to determine a specific journey time.
