Lehrte offers a variety of highlights for your stay: a medicinal plant garden, places of remembrance and themed discovery tours. If you are looking for a hotel in Lehrte, you can first consider whether you are more interested in gardens and local history or would prefer to focus on a route. The tour distances and options provide a practical guide.

Gardens and Lehrte’s History

The medicinal plant garden is located in the park of Lehrte Hospital. It opened in spring 2009 as a Garden Region project. Around 200 medicinal plants grow on a 240-square-metre mound. The planting may change over time; check current access arrangements separately before your visit.

Historical memorials are another topic to explore in Lehrte. Between 2000 and 2011, 30 historically significant buildings received bronze plaques. In 2012, 21 Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) were also laid in Lehrte. They commemorate people who were forced from their homes during the Nazi era. The two forms of commemoration place different emphasis on what is remembered: the plaques refer to buildings, while the Stolpersteine commemorate people.

Hohnhorst Park adds nature, culture and recreational sports to these themes. The park covers about 28 hectares and brings these three areas together. It offers a distinct focus alongside the medicinal plant garden and places of remembrance, without requiring you to follow a particular route.

Themed Discovery Tours and Distances

Lehrte and its districts can be explored on 16 discovery tours. They can be done on foot, by bicycle or by car. QR-code stations along the tours provide information about buildings, monuments, churches and Stolpersteine. Several formats are available for planning: you can start the tours in Komoot, download GPX files or print PDFs. Before setting out, check whether the digital formats you want are currently available.

The “Waters in and around Lehrte” route is a family cycling tour through nature. At about 60 kilometres long, it can be ridden in stages, with several railway stations available for access. “Following the Storks” is a shorter option: this route is about 20 kilometres long and passes stork nests in several of Lehrte’s districts and in Lehrte itself. Comparing the stated distances helps you gauge the length of the two routes; the stork route also has a different theme from the tour along the waterways.

Hanover Region: More Nature and Culture

Those who look beyond Lehrte to the Hanover Region will find other distinct themes. Steinhuder Meer is the largest inland body of water in north-western Germany. In Mardorf, a state-recognised resort, a five-kilometre lakeside path invites you to take a walk; the nearby Tote Moor is one of the region’s important nature reserves and provides habitat for numerous animal and plant species. These nature attractions complement Lehrte’s garden and tour highlights.

The region’s cultural attractions offer a different experience. Hanover’s Herrenhausen Gardens comprise the Great Garden, the Berggarten, the Georgengarten and the Welfengarten. The Berggarten evolved from a vegetable and nursery garden into a botanical garden. The Hanover Region therefore offers both extensive garden landscapes and Lehrte’s own garden, remembrance and tour highlights.
