Gehrden offers a variety of ways to spend your stay: walks and routes sit alongside landscaped parks, local history and an observation tower. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus on outdoor activities and scenery, or garden design and historic buildings.
Parks with different garden styles
The Trip’sche Parkanlage combines Baroque features with elements of an English landscape garden. A broad staircase and Italian-style terraces give the park its distinctive character; from there, views extend across the Calenberger Land and towards the Deister. Those interested in garden design can find two distinct styles in a single park.
The Ottomar-von-Reden-Park also has a long history: its origins date back to 1590. Parts of the park, including areas with trees that are in some cases centuries old, are listed as historic monuments. Its historical significance is therefore evident not only in a single feature, but also in protected areas of the park.
Walks, routes and views
There are several hiking options in Gehrden. The Kansteinweg is an established hiking route that passes through the town. Gehrden also lies on an outer loop of the Green Ring. The Ottomar-von-Reden-Park is linked to RegionsRoute 3, the outer loop between Ronnenberg and Gehrden. If you plan to use this route for a cycling trip, check the signs before setting off.
Another landmark is the Burgbergturm on the Gehrdener Berg. In clear weather, the view stretches across the Calenberger Land towards Steinhuder Meer. The tower was built in 1897/1898 within a hillfort attributed to the Cherusci. Here, a specific viewpoint meets a historical tradition attributed with due caution. The views are in different directions: from the terraces of the Trip’sche Parkanlage, the view looks towards the Deister; from the Burgbergturm, in clear weather, it looks towards Steinhuder Meer.
Local history and art in public spaces
St. Margaret’s Church is Gehrden’s oldest building; its tower dates from the early 13th century. The Gehrden Town Museum offers a glimpse into a different historical period: it was established in 1975 in a former brewery building dating from 1665. The two places offer different perspectives on architectural history, from a medieval tower to a former brewery building.
The Sonnenweg is an urban art trail that runs through Gehrden. Its permanent features include around 45 paving stones with sun motifs and a historic sundial in the market square. The same square hosts a three-part open-air concert series as part of the cultural program. Art in public spaces and events provide another focus alongside the history of the parks and buildings.
Choose a focus for your stay
The Burgbergturm adds a viewpoint to the options, with distant views that depend on clear weather.
