Local history, church architecture and a forest discovery trail give Wendeburg a range of attractions for a stay. The cultural trail focuses on local institutions and the history of the villages; St. Mary’s Church provides a historic landmark, and the forest discovery trail covers woodland topics at 22 stations. There are also cycling routes, a rural performing arts programme and seasonal asparagus. This combination helps you choose what to focus on in Wendeburg during your trip.

Local History and Church Architecture

Since 2021, Wendeburg’s cultural trail has been open to visitors in the central village of Wendeburg. Information boards introduce key local institutions and the history of the villages. They are visible and accessible at central locations in the municipality’s villages. The network of boards can be expanded, and their locations may also change.

St. Mary’s Church is Wendeburg’s oldest building. Its 36-metre-high tower is dated approximately to the period between 1250 and 1300. A consecration plaque from 1439 points to a major renovation of the church. The same building therefore bears both an approximate date for the tower and a later reference to its building history.

The Weidenkirche Friedrich Spee has a very different design: this open structure consists of eight arches and bound willow branches. The church is open around the clock. In spring and summer it is used for baptisms, weddings, church services and Taizé prayers; actual seasonal use may vary.

Rural Culture and Seasonal Cuisine

In Meerdorf, the teatr dach association presents a rural performing arts programme featuring cabaret, concerts and children’s theatre. Performances take place on a stage in a former farmhouse. The programme may change. The cuisine also has a seasonal focus: asparagus plays an important role in Wendeburg’s local food scene in May and June. Asparagus can also be bought directly from producers.

The Bortfeld Farmhouse Museum is housed in a farmhouse whose core dates back to 1639. It offers a glimpse into the lives and work of the region’s rural population. Check whether access is possible before visiting.

Forest and Outdoor Activities

The Zweidorfer Holz is home to a 25,000-square-metre woodland of beech, oak and alder trees, which is used for the forest discovery trail. The trail has 22 activity stations covering woodland phenomena, animals, changes in the forest and how wood grows. Three access points are listed: behind the Paradiessee campsite near Meerdorf, on the edge of Sophiental and at Zweidorfer MĂĽhle. The trail can only be reached on foot or by bicycle. Forestry or path maintenance work may affect access; check conditions before your visit.

Wendeburg’s cycling options include scenic routes, circular tours and the long-distance Kulturroute cycling route. The Forests and Lakes Tour is 32 kilometres long, while the route around Meerdorfer Holz is about 12 kilometres. The two tours therefore differ considerably in length. Some sections of Wendeburg’s cycle paths can also be used for walking or hiking. Check route details and availability before setting off.

Additional Culture in the Wider Peine Destination

In the wider Peine destination, the Protestant St. Jakobi Church in Peine offers a distinct Neo-Gothic feature: built in 1899, it has had its original colourful wall and ceiling paintings restored. ZeitRäume Bodenstedt displays preserved original furnishings from various stylistic periods in the main building of a three-sided farmstead, built in 1878. Audio guides and film projections bring developments from the imperial era to the 1960s to life.
