An industrial monument dating from 1733, a pond with a mining history and a cable car covering 110 metres in elevation give Bad Lauterberg in the Harz several specific points of interest. They are complemented by a spa park, guided hikes and winter activities. The options range from industrial history to outdoor activities.
Industrial History and Historic Sites
Königshütte is an industrial monument built in 1733 as an ironworks with a foundry. Visitors who would like to learn more about the complex can join a tour organised by the Königshütte Friends’ Association. The offer includes both the Königshütte complex and the South Harz Ironworks Museum. Check the current tour dates in advance.
The site of the former Lutterberg Castle is another specific location connected with several historical dates: the castle was built in 1183 and destroyed in 1415. A few remains, including the ramparts, have survived; the Hausberg mountain restaurant stands on the former castle grounds. This makes it possible to distinguish the former castle from the site’s present-day use.
The Bismarck Tower forest restaurant has an observation tower. If you would like to visit the tower, check the access conditions in advance, as they may change.
Pond History and Paths in the Spa Park
Wiesenbek Pond is a historic artificial pond in Bad Lauterberg in the Harz. It was created in 1715 to supply water to a copper mine and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Upper Harz Water Management System” since 2010. The pond’s history therefore goes back to a time when its water supply served a specific mining purpose.
Stand-up paddleboarding is possible at Wiesenbek Pond. You can bring your own SUP equipment or rent gear on site; check with the operator in advance to confirm current rental availability. This lets you plan the activity with your own equipment or make it contingent on rental being available, without assuming that a rental appointment is available.
For a stroll, the spa park offers a different kind of experience: you can walk through the grounds among mature trees, ponds and water-treading facilities. The water-treading stations rally is a separate activity that links eight water-treading stations with an arm pool. The difference lies in the focus: the spa park combines walking paths with greenery and water, while the rally brings together the water-treading stations and arm pool as a series of connected stops.
Hikes, Cable Car and Winter Activities
The Bad Lauterberg Tourist Information Office regularly offers guided hikes led by experienced hiking guides. As the dates are part of the local programme, check the latest schedule before making plans. If you would rather take on a challenge independently, consider the town and hiking challenge: a booklet of tasks takes families with children on a discovery tour through Bad Lauterberg and the surrounding area. Correct answers earn a certificate and a small surprise. Materials and rewards may change, so check the current offer in advance.
Since 1954, a cable car has connected the centre of Bad Lauterberg with the Hausberg. It covers 110 metres in elevation over a distance of 440 metres. These figures give you a concrete sense of the distance and change in elevation; check that the service is running before your trip.
There is also a designated winter offer: Bad Lauterberg has a ski slope about 300 metres long with a drag lift, as well as access to the 47-kilometre SĂĽdharz cross-country ski trail network. Use depends on snow and trail conditions. Check these conditions if you are planning a stay centred on skiing or cross-country skiing.
