In the western part of the Lübberstedt MUNA, there were 109 bunkers; some were blown up towards the end of the war. During the Nazi era, the facility was a subcamp of Neuengamme concentration camp.
MUNA and Memorial Trail
The five-kilometre-long “Memorial Trail” explores the former munitions facility and the forced labourers. Guided tours along the trail have been offered since 2012; confirm their availability before your trip. These are distinct from the MUNA association’s monthly guided tours of the otherwise closed site. If you are planning this visit, ask the association about the frequency of tours and access requirements. This lets you plan the guided route and the tour of the site as separate visitor offerings.
Another memorial site
Twelve people are buried in Lübberstedt cemetery, where a memorial stone commemorates their fate. The memorial stone is a tangible point of reference for remembering these twelve people.
The mill and choosing a route
“Der griese Graue,” a fully operational drive-through Dutch-style windmill, stands on the Osterholzer Geest. Its covered passage was used to move grain and flour between carts and the mill machinery. This makes it possible to understand the mill’s design through its operation: the passage served a practical transport function.
Guided tours and milling demonstrations are available for interested visitors. Check with the organiser in advance for current visitor options, as arrangements may vary.
The “Lübbster Möhl” offers a different focus from the themed guided tours. It runs mainly along forest and farm tracks and quiet country roads. It is described as family-friendly because it is relatively short. These differences can help you choose between the options: for the route, consider the types of paths and its relative brevity; for the guided tours, consider their historical context and the format of each visit. Would you like to join a guided tour and learn more about local history, or would you prefer the shorter route across a variety of path types?
In the wider Osterholz destination
Within the wider Osterholz destination, Worpswede offers its own artistic and cultural highlights. The Worpswede Art Gallery permanently displays works by the first generation of Worpswede painters and their successors. From 1895 to 1923, the Barkenhoff was Heinrich Vogeler’s home and workplace. In addition, peat-barge trips are regularly offered from Neu Helgoland in Worpswede from May to early October. Replicas of historic peat barges explore the Hamme. Check the dates in advance for your travel year, as schedules may change. The Große Kunstschau was established in 1927.
