There are various ways to discover Wallenhorst: the approximately 37-kilometre “Around Wallenhorst” cycling tour takes you through all the districts, while mills and archaeological sites provide a cultural focus. Forests, fields and river meadows shape the landscape; the River Hase and the branch canal also offer opportunities for water sports. When planning your visit, consider whether you would prefer to focus on a longer cycling route, a shorter walking trail or specific cultural topics.

By Bike, on Foot or on the Water

The cycling route and the hiking trail differ both in length and in how you travel. “Around Wallenhorst” is approximately 37 kilometres long and passes through all the districts of the municipality. A more compact option on foot is the 3.7-kilometre TERRA.track “Kulturpfad Königstannen.” The distances can help you weigh up the routes based on their length and activity: a longer circular cycling tour versus a much shorter walking trail. Before setting off, check the current signposting for the cycling tour; for the TERRA.track, check the latest trail conditions.

Water can also be part of the experience: Wallenhorst offers water sports on the River Hase and the branch canal, allowing you to explore parts of the municipality from the water. This adds a different perspective to the walking and cycling routes. If you plan to take part in water sports, check with local providers and confirm the conditions yourself.

Mills and Archaeology

Lechtingen Windmill was built in 1887 and restored in the 1980s. At Lechtingen Mill in Wallenhorst, a permanent exhibition on the traditional use of sods as fertilizer is housed in a restored pigsty and displayed outdoors. Before visiting the exhibition, check the current opening times.

The Helmichsteine are another cultural landmark: they are one of 33 sites of archaeological interest along the Megalithic Culture Route. Trained guides offer walking tours, cycling tours and talks in the municipality of Wallenhorst; you can arrange individual appointments with them directly.

A Special Type of Accommodation

The Hollager Mühle youth recreation centre, which has a campsite, accommodates groups and overnight guests. The 2.7-hectare site is surrounded by a small forest. The centrepiece of the grounds is the tower of a 170-year-old watermill; there is also a mill pond and a mill stream running through the site. If you are planning to stay there overnight, check availability in advance.

More Culture in the Osnabrück Destination

The Osnabrück destination offers a range of other cultural attractions. At the Tuchmacher Museum Bramsche, fluffy woollen blankets are made on working machines that are over 100 years old. The Varus Battle exhibits at the Museum and Park Kalkriese are presented using multimedia and are open to visitors. This offers a choice of regional cultural experiences, from textile production to an exhibition about the Varus Battle.
