Dötlingen combines a distinctive historic village center with a variety of nature and cultural experiences. St. Firminus, the Tabkenhof, and the so-called “1,000-year-old village oak” together define the village center; several trails lead to the Hunte River and into Poggenpohlsmoor. The routes vary in theme, length, and stated duration, allowing you to focus on cultural highlights and landscapes according to your interests.

Trails Along the Hunte and Through the Moor

The Huntepadd circular trail starts and ends at the Karkbäk car park, Karkbäk 15, 27801 Dötlingen. An optional loop, just under two kilometers long, leads to the Sensory and Experience Garden. The garden is open to the public and free to enter, and has been designed to be accessible; check access before you travel. Many stations invite you to experience and explore your senses. Features include tactile posts, a hammock net, and a humming stone. The Huntepadd also passes Gierenberg, which offers sweeping views across the Hunte valley.

The Rieselwiesenpadd is a circular route of around ten kilometers that is easy to reach from the village center. It follows the Hunte through the Poggenpohlsmoor nature reserve and across former irrigation meadows, a cultural landscape that has been made accessible for visitors to experience. This makes it considerably longer than the optional loop of just under two kilometers to the Sensory Garden. Check the trail conditions and signage before setting out.

The Moorpadd leads from the “Zur Loh” car park in Dötlingen through the Poggenpohlsmoor nature reserve to the Oltmannberg natural monument, also known as O-Berg. With a little luck, you may spot rare plant and animal species along the way, including the moor frog. A sighting is therefore possible, but cannot be planned for. The route has a different landmark—the Oltmannberg—than the Rieselwiesenpadd, which follows the Hunte and crosses former irrigation meadows.

Architecture and Local History

The so-called “1,000-year-old village oak,” together with the medieval St. Firminus fieldstone church and the thatched Tabkenhof, forms the village center of this artists’ village. The oak’s name does not reflect its actual age: scientific studies show that it is not 1,000 years old. This qualification is part of the village center’s story, alongside the three landmarks mentioned together.

St. Firminus is one of the oldest and most remarkable churches in the region. Paintings have been preserved inside, with origins dating back to the time the church was built, although much of what can be seen today has been supplemented. Its present-day appearance thus brings together elements dating from the construction period and extensive later additions.

The Tabkenhof is thatched, 58 meters long, and considered the largest timber-framed hall house in northwestern Germany. Its length gives the building a tangible scale; together with the church and village oak, it forms the village center described here. The partially reconstructed megalithic tomb at the shooting range is also within Dötlingen’s built-up area.

The fenced farmhouse garden is located at the entrance to the public village garden. Benches and seating groups invite visitors to linger there. The Sensory and Experience Garden offers a distinct focus: sensory stations take center stage there, while the farmhouse garden is described in terms of its seating and its layout as a fenced garden.

Artists’ Village and Walks

The KulturAktiv tour takes you around the artists’ village of Dötlingen, with its numerous galleries and cafés. Its focus differs from that of the trails through the moor and along the Hunte: art and places to stop for refreshments are part of this tour’s theme.

The crime-story walk “Tabea Thaler – The Ghost of Dötlingen” is 2.5 kilometers long and takes around two hours. This tour therefore has both a specified route length and an approximate duration. It is considerably shorter than the Rieselwiesenpadd, which is around ten kilometers long; check the accompanying tour guide before your trip.
