Wietzen brings together rural history, a church building with a medieval appearance, and leisure activities on a farm. This range of options is helpful when choosing the focus of your stay: the Local History Museum is dedicated to rural life and historical finds, St. Gangolf highlights architectural history, and leisure activities take centre stage at Hof Claus. You can therefore tailor the balance between culture and leisure to your interests; the offerings differ in both subject and format.

Wietzen Local History Museum: rural history

The Wietzen Local History Museum is a rural local history museum. Covering around 700 m², it displays more than 6,700 exhibits across three buildings and an outdoor area with a traditional farm garden. These include prehistoric finds, exhibits on rural working life and domestic culture, agricultural equipment, and traditional crafts. Bringing together artefacts, everyday culture and crafts offers different ways to explore rural history. Visits are by appointment.

Since 2011, the Local History Museum has also included a history workshop and an associated municipal archive. This means that, in addition to its exhibition, the museum encompasses these two further components. Anyone interested in Wietzen’s history will find here both a collection covering a range of ways of life and the history workshop and archive as parts of the Local History Museum.

St. Gangolf Church: a different perspective on history

St. Gangolf Church in Wietzen was built around 1150 from massive stone blocks and still gives the impression of a medieval fortified church. Unlike the Local History Museum, the building itself takes centre stage here: its construction period, materials and fortified-church appearance offer a different historical perspective from the collection on rural work and domestic culture. Those interested in architectural history will therefore find in St. Gangolf a clear thematic counterpoint to a museum visit.

Leisure activities at Hof Claus

Hof Claus in Wietzen offers football golf, Bauerngolf® and a maize maze. The three activities differ in format: two types of golf are complemented by the seasonal maze. If the maize maze is relevant to your plans, its season is a factor to consider in its own right. Football golf and Bauerngolf are other leisure activities offered at the farm. Alongside its historical attractions, Wietzen therefore also offers a range of activities with a different focus.

Culture and experiences in the wider Nienburg destination

In the wider Nienburg destination, the Nienburg Museum traces the development of the Central Weser region, from the presence of the first people to the present day, across three historic buildings. Its main building is the Fresenhof, a manor house dating from the 16th century. The museum includes the Asparagus Museum, the Biedermeier Garden and a lapidarium; the Neoclassical villa offers more in-depth insights into the 19th century. The Nienburg Museum thus provides a broad regional history overview, while the Wietzen Local History Museum focuses on rural ways of life and exhibits.

Nienburg’s old town has its own distinctive character: half-timbered façades, Weser Renaissance façades and brickwork shape its townscape; Nienburg looks back on 1,000 years of history. The Dinosaur Park Münchehagen in the wider Nienburg destination offers a very different way to explore the past. More than 300 dinosaur footprints are on view there, bearing witness to a time around 140 million years ago. Activities for young children include excavating a 25-metre-long skeleton.
