Rohrsen can be explored through two clearly distinct themes: the Weser Cycle Route and notable landmarks of local history. The cycle route passes through the village; at the same time, the Old School and Alte Schanze are two specific historical points of interest. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider whether to include Rohrsen mainly as a stop on the cycle route, for its historic sites, or with a recurring festival in mind.

Cycling and the Strawberry Festival

The Weser Cycle Route passes through Rohrsen. The ADFC describes the route through the village as scenic and away from the main road. The Strawberry Festival adds a recurring occasion: it takes place in the afternoon around the Old School. Around 100 cyclists set off early in the morning to take part. The festival and the group’s departure therefore take place at different times. If you would like to plan your trip around the Strawberry Festival, check the date in advance.

The Old School and Alte Schanze

The Old School was built in the village centre in the late 19th century; only the exterior can be viewed. Alte Schanze, near the Weser, points to a different period: Swedish troops built it in 1640 during the Thirty Years’ War. Today, it remains as an earthen mound. An information board indicates the location of the fortification; the route to it is signposted in Rohrsen. The two historic sites thus differ both in the periods they represent and in how visitors can explore them: the exterior of the school can be viewed, while the board and signs provide orientation for the fortification.

Putting it in the context of the wider destination of Nienburg

The wider destination of Nienburg offers a broader view of cultural history. The Nienburg Museum traces the development of the Middle Weser region, from the presence of the first people to the present day, across three historic buildings. Its main building is the Fresenhof, a castle manor dating from the 16th century. The museum also includes the Asparagus Museum, the Biedermeier Garden and a lapidarium; the Neoclassical villa offers further insights into the 19th century. In Nienburg’s old town, half-timbered façades, Weser Renaissance façades and brickwork sit alongside one another. The city has a history stretching back 1,000 years. The wider destination therefore also offers museum collections and a historic townscape as cultural attractions in their own right. In the wider destination of Nienburg, two religious buildings add to the historical picture: Loccum Abbey is a religious house built in 1163; the collegiate church of St. Maternian et St. Nicolai in Bücken has a triumphal cross dating from 1230 and richly illustrated stained-glass windows from the 13th century.

Another option in the wider destination of Nienburg is a trip with the Mittelweser fleet: it offers sightseeing, experience and charter cruises on the Weser and Aller, departing from Nienburg or Verden. The operator publishes the schedules separately. If a cruise is central to your plans, check the current dates in advance.
