A park project and a cycling tour towards Eystrup offer two different ways to explore Hämelhausen. The “Paradies Zum Guten Hirten” environmental project run by Hassel parish includes a 600-square-metre park for gathering and burials in Hämelhausen.

Cycling route and nearby Hämelsee lake

The “ALLERhand am WESERstrand” cycling tour follows Hämelseestraße to Hämelhausen and continues towards Eystrup on the cycle path beside Dorfstraße. There is no cycle path along the 3.5-kilometre approach on Hämelseestraße. Take this section into account when choosing your route, and distinguish it from the continuation along the cycle path.

Nearby is Hämelsee, a natural bathing lake of about six hectares in a wooded area near the district of Anderten, northeast of the municipality of Heemsen. The cycling tour passes the lake and continues to Hämelhausen. This brings together two distinct highlights: a cycling route and a natural bathing lake. Swimming conditions and water quality may vary; bear this in mind if you are planning to swim.

More to explore in the wider Nienburg destination

The wider Nienburg destination offers a range of themes, from urban history to natural history. In Nienburg itself, the old town combines half-timbered façades, Weser Renaissance façades and brickwork; Nienburg is a historic town with a 1,000-year history. The Nienburg Museum traces the development of the Central Weser region from the presence of the first people to the present day across three historic buildings. Its main building is the Fresenhof, a Burgmannshof manor house dating from the 16th century. The museum includes the Asparagus Museum, the Biedermeier Garden and a lapidarium; the Neoclassical villa offers deeper insights into the 19th century.

Other historic buildings offer a range of different highlights: Schinna Monastery, in the district of Schinna in the municipality of Stolzenau, is a heritage site of significance beyond the region. Loccum Monastery is a religious house built in 1163. In Bücken, the collegiate church of St. Maternian and St. Nicolai houses important art treasures, including a rood cross from 1230 and richly illustrated stained-glass windows from the 13th century. In Landesbergen, the wedding mill, built in 1872, houses a small exhibition on local history.

Nine traditional barns have been preserved in the historic Im Schünebusch barn quarter in Estorf. They house a local history museum with exhibitions on agricultural tools, rural domestic life, a bakery and village history. Groups can spend the night in rustic surroundings at the Radler-Scheune barn by prior arrangement. This is a special offer for groups and requires advance booking.

For a different take on natural history, Dinosaur Park Münchehagen features more than 300 dinosaur footprints, evidence of a time about 140 million years ago. Hands-on activities are aimed especially at young children and include excavating a 25-metre-long skeleton. Another cycling option is the 23.6-kilometre circular route on the Weser Cycle Path between Landesbergen and Stolzenau. Check route conditions before setting off. Flotte Mittelweser offers round trips, experience cruises and charter trips on the Weser and Aller, departing from Nienburg or Verden; check the operator’s timetable when planning your trip.
