Soderstorf can be explored through two main themes: archaeological evidence in and near the village, and trails through heathland and forest landscapes. If you are looking for accommodation here, you can plan your outings according to whether you want to focus on a local cultural attraction, a section of trail through Soderstorf, or a longer themed route. The routes differ considerably in length and course, so both their focus and the distance you want to cover are relevant when choosing one.

Archaeological Traces and Architectural Heritage

During walks through the districts, you can visit prehistoric megalithic tombs and burial mounds of cultural and historical significance. Soderstorf also has accessible evidence of settlement culture from the Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age. The archaeological points of interest therefore span several eras.

Near Soderstorf, the Raven stone tomb lies in a wooded heathland landscape. The well-preserved Neolithic burial chamber was built from megaliths around 5,000 years ago. The Kultur-Findlinge-Weg highlights Soderstorf’s megalithic tombs as important evidence of early settlement history. Along its 88 km route through Soderstorf and Raven, you will also find historic half-timbered houses, decorated granaries and old churches. This brings regional architectural heritage into focus alongside the prehistoric tombs. Megaliths are large stones that form the burial chamber here.

Heathland Trails and Nature

The Heide-Panorama-Weg passes through classic heathland, with birches, junipers and pines growing on sandy soils within the forest. The Soderstorf section passes the historic Soderstorf watermill, which has shaped the landscape since 1427. The mill can only be viewed from the outside. The Schwindequelle is considered Lower Saxony’s second most abundant spring, flowing at 60 litres per second.

Comparing distances can help you choose a trail: the Heide-Panorama-Weg is 14 km long and divided into two sections, one of which runs through Soderstorf. The 75 km Heidepuzzle-Weg leads from Amelinghausen to Soderstorf via the Schwindequelle and Schwindebecker Heide. At 88 km, the Kultur-Findlinge-Weg is longer and runs through Soderstorf and Raven. This gives you a choice of one route with a named section through the village and two longer themed routes that cover the region.

Between Soderstorf and Schwindebeck, areas formerly used for military purposes now serve as recreation areas and are primarily designated for tourism. The heathland there has trails for walking, cycling and horse riding. On the section near Schwindebeck, stamp stations feature legends, fairy tales and information about the Lüneburg Heath. Those who complete the stamp booklet receive the Amelinghausen Heathland Diploma. The Heide-Panorama-Weg is connected to the Schwindebeckerheide car park. Check trail conditions and parking arrangements before setting out; you should also check in advance whether stamp materials are available.
