Bleckede lies between Geest and marshland and stretches along the Elbe with 13 districts. The landscape of the Lower Saxon Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve surrounds the town and offers nature experiences as well as rare animal species. Housed in Bleckede Castle, the Biosphaerium Elbtalaue is an information and visitor center for the reserve. Its modern exhibition on birds and aquatic life covers more than 1,000 square meters.

Landscape routes and geological history

A hiking route starts at the parking lot by the Biosphaerium Elbtalaue – Bleckede Castle. It follows the dike and a sandy path past old branches of the Elbe, bends and oxbow lakes, then crosses the lock on the “Old Elbe” toward Schäferei Heisterbusch. The route thus passes specific landscape features of the Elbe River Landscape.

The erratic boulder ring in Breetze, a district of Bleckede, offers a different perspective on nature. There you can view Ice Age erratic boulders that illustrate how the Elbe Urstromtal was formed. This makes the boulder ring thematically distinct from the hiking route: the dike, sandy path and old branches of the Elbe shape the route, while the focus here is on Ice Age geology.

Castle history, views and town culture

Bleckede Castle is a listed historic complex dating back several centuries. Its oldest part is a historic remnant of a tower dating from the 13th century. The viewing platform on Bleckede Castle’s keep offers 360-degree views of the landscape in and around Bleckede. Another historic landmark is St. Jacobi Church, rebuilt in 1766 in the late Baroque style. Bleckede has two distinct historic landmarks: the oldest part of the castle dates from the 13th century, while St. Jacobi Church was rebuilt in 1766 in the late Baroque style.

Guided town tours are available for groups. In one hour, they provide an overview of the town’s sights, culture and history; they can be longer on request. Tours are arranged through the tourist information office.

More activities in the Elbe River Landscape

A railbike follows the disused railway line between Alt Garge and Bleckede through meadows, forests and the beautiful natural landscape of the Elbe River Landscape. If you are planning a ride for a specific date, check in advance whether it will be offered then. The Bleckede narrow-gauge railway also runs historic trains through varied landscapes between LĂĽneburg and Bleckede. Check dates in advance if you want to include a specific trip in your plans.

The activities offer different highlights: the railbike focuses on the ride along the disused railway line and the landscape; the boulder ring on geological history; and the Biosphaerium on birds and aquatic life. The castle, viewpoint and church complement these nature-focused attractions with Bleckede’s architectural history and views of the landscape.
