Barendorf brings together village history, a historic landscape park and specific cycle-route connections. The oldest datable reference goes back to the 9th century; a 2.5-kilometre cycle path connects Barendorf with state road 221. The different visiting conditions are also important for planning your trip: the manor park is private, and visitors are asked to register in advance. St Matthew’s Church is reliably open from April to October. Check visiting and opening conditions before travelling.

History Across Several Periods

Barendorf is the oldest datable place in the Ostheide; a reference to it goes back to the 9th century. Later milestones reveal different aspects of its history. In 1291, Duke Otto of LĂĽneburg reacquired Barendorf in exchange for three measures of salt from the LĂĽneburg saltworks. He then transferred the place to LĂĽne Abbey. In 1450, the Winsen tax register recorded Barendorpe as a village with seven smallholdings and one cottage. The village was described as having a Wendish character. In 1529, Barendorf became the seat of the bailiwick of the same name in the Amt LĂĽne, which administered 20 villages and two other estates. This sequence traces its development from an early reference through its village structure to its administrative role.

Manor Park and St Matthew’s Church

Barendorf Manor Park is a historic landscape park with rare features of reform garden architecture and is a listed heritage site. A large bathing pond was created during a redesign in 1919. The park is private; visitors are asked to register in advance. As visiting arrangements may change, check them before your visit.

St Matthew’s Church offers different guidance for visitors: it was built in 1964/65 and is reliably open from April to October. As opening practices may change, it is advisable to check before travelling. The side windows create an especially bright interior. The park and the church therefore differ both in their architectural and garden history and in the visiting conditions described here.

Cycle Routes and Landscape

There are two different route options for cyclists. A 2.5-kilometre cycle route connects Barendorf with state road 221 and closes a gap in the district’s cycle network. The concrete path is 2.5 metres wide and runs through a wooded area. Continuous cycle paths run along district road 28 from Vastorf through Barendorf to Scharnebeck. The 2.5-kilometre distance refers to the connection to state road 221; the route along K-28 is described by the towns of Vastorf, Barendorf and Scharnebeck. Check current path conditions before setting out.

The village’s development also provides its own context: Barendorf has evolved from a small farming village into a modern municipality with new residential areas. Local shopping and everyday services include doctors, the municipal administration and a savings bank. A large landwehr fortification also runs through the surrounding fields, probably the Lüneburg Landwehr.
