If you are looking for accommodation in Waddeweitz, you can also consider the surrounding municipality: nature park landscapes, Rundling villages, crafts and a natural swimming pool offer different ways to shape your travel plans. The municipality of Waddeweitz is located in the Elbhöhen-Wendland Nature Park. Gently rising hills, extensive forests, green meadows and blossoming fields define the landscape. Tree-shaded Rundling villages lie among them.
Nature and village layouts in the municipality
Each village in the municipality has its own distinctive features. Kröte lies on the edge of the Elbufer-Drawehn Nature Reserve. Diahren, in turn, is an elongated, horseshoe-shaped Rundling with an oval village green and a road leading into it. These two examples offer different starting points for planning a trip: the natural landscape on the edge of a protected area and the distinctive layout of a Wendland village.
The landscape can also help you choose a focus for your visit. If you are interested in village history, you can explore Diahren and the historic buildings in Kukate. If you want to focus on natural areas, you can visit Kröte, in the municipality, on the edge of the Elbufer-Drawehn Nature Reserve. These destinations are in the municipality of Waddeweitz; the landscape and village features describe the wider area, not just the locality of Waddeweitz.
Crafts and village history
Kukate is home to a listed two-post house dating from 1786. It was dismantled in the neighbouring village of Zebelin and rebuilt in Kukate. Kukate is also home to the listed Werkhof, a seminar venue for art and crafts. The house and the Werkhof offer different insights: one tells the story of local architecture and history, while the other is dedicated to practical and artistic work.
At Kunst Maddau, a goldsmith and visual artist works. Visitors can arrange a visit by calling 05849/971168 or simply ring the bell without an appointment. This makes the art offering different from the historic buildings: here, the focus is on an artist’s work.
The natural swimming pool run by the Waldbad Wittfeitzen association is in GroĂź Wittfeitzen. The 2026 public swimming season has ended. If the pool is important to your stay, check the dates for the season that applies to your trip. Another possible reason to visit is the vintage tractor pulling event in Klein Gaddau. The municipality says it takes place every two years; check the date of any specific event before planning your trip.
Culture and nature in the wider LĂĽchow-Dannenberg destination
The wider Lüchow-Dannenberg destination offers further cultural and nature-related experiences. The Wendland Rundlingsmuseum features a farmstead in the Rundling village of Lübeln as an open-air museum. Traditional crafts are brought to life there in the pottery, forge, bakehouse and wheelwright’s workshop. The Hitzacker Archaeological Centre is also an open-air museum: people were already living on the site around 4,000 years ago. Three reconstructed longhouses and numerous interactive stations offer insights into the daily lives of people in the past. The two museums therefore focus on different subjects: crafts in Lübeln and early settlement history in Hitzacker.
For nature lovers, the Göhrde is another point of interest in the region. It is the largest contiguous mixed forest in northern Germany. With its many protected areas, the Göhrde Forest provides a habitat for numerous rare and endangered species. On request, Naturum Göhrde offers forest experiences and guided walks on a range of topics. Alongside the villages and their craft venues, forests and nature interpretation are also stand-alone themes to consider when planning a trip.
