Uplengen offers a range of reasons to stay: nature trails in Holle Sand and Stapeler Moor, Remels Mill and its history, and the leisure complex at the bathing lake in Großsander. If you are planning an overnight stay in Uplengen, these destinations can help you decide whether nature, culture or the facilities at the bathing lake should shape your stay most.

Moorland Paths and Nature in Uplengen

The Holle Sand nature reserve has well-signposted walking trails marked according to the junction system. The area is also a habitat for numerous animal and plant species. The trail markings and habitat provide two different points of reference for a visit: finding your way along the walking trails and experiencing the nature of the protected area.

The Stapeler Moor Moorland Experience Trail is a 1.6-kilometre circular walking route. Its highlights include an observation tower and a reconstruction of an ancient plank path, like the one that crossed the moor thousands of years ago. The reconstruction draws attention to a historic way of crossing the moor, while the observation tower is another notable feature of the circular route.

The two nature destinations offer different focal points: in Holle Sand, the trails are marked according to the junction system; the path in Stapeler Moor has a stated circular-route length and combines the trail with a reconstruction of a historic plank path. Each destination therefore offers its own way of exploring Uplengen’s landscapes and nature.

Remels Mill: History and Planning Your Visit

Remels Mill is a gallery Dutch windmill dating from 1803. The municipality of Uplengen acquired it in 1963 and uses it as a registry office and to display an exhibition of historic agricultural equipment. Its construction date, municipal use and exhibition bring together several aspects at this destination: the history of the mill and material culture related to agriculture.

Visits and guided tours are available by prior arrangement. Coordinate the arrangements with the local tourist information office and plan your mill visit as a pre-booked appointment.

Bathing Lake in Großsander

The leisure complex at the bathing lake in Großsander has a snack bar with a kiosk. If you would like to include these facilities in your plans, check that they are currently available before your visit.
