Ostrhauderfehn offers a range of options for planning your trip: architectural history in Potshausen and Idafehn, a signposted cycling route, and water sports at Lake Idasee. These themes give you different ways to shape your stay.

Landscape and Churches in Potshausen

North of Potshausen, the Leda lowlands, with their open marshland, shape the landscape. This offers a different focus from the historic buildings: here, the open lowland landscape takes centre stage, while there, the focus is on architectural and local history.

Potshausen Church is the oldest church in Ostrhauderfehn. The new church in Potshausen was built in 1865 and consecrated on 18 March 1866. It houses an altarpiece from 1647, which came from its predecessor church. This brings together two different periods: the painting comes from the predecessor church, while the new building dates from the 19th century. If you are interested in church history, Potshausen offers a specific historical focus.

The Mill and Wiekentour

The Idafehn Mill also reflects different phases of construction. It was built in 1891 and rebuilt by the municipality of Ostrhauderfehn. In 2001, it was completed as a gallery Dutch windmill with a packing house. These dates mark two distinct chapters: its original construction and the completed rebuild in this form.

One way to link several of the sights mentioned above on a single route is the Wiekentour. This well-signposted, 29-kilometre circular cycling route follows Ostrhauderfehn’s perfectly straight Fehn canals. It passes Petrus Church, the Idafehn Mill, the white drawbridges and Lake Idasee, and continues into the moorland. You can explore the route by bike, on foot or by car. Its length and the stops along the way make it a clearly defined option for planning your trip.

Water Sports and Longer Routes

At the Idasee leisure complex in Idafehn, you can go waterskiing, wakeboarding, monoskiing and kneeboarding. For a trip focused on water sports, this offers a specific selection of activities alongside the historic buildings and cycling route.

The Moorerlebnisroute is on a different scale: it is about 100 kilometres long and connects Ostrhauderfehn, Rhauderfehn, BarĂźel, Saterland and Esterwegen. Comparing it with the 29-kilometre Wiekentour helps you choose the right route length: the Wiekentour is described as a circular cycling route, while the Moorerlebnisroute connects several municipalities. Your choice therefore depends on whether a loop along the Fehn canals or a longer route through several towns better suits your travel plans.

Culture in the Wider Destination of Leer

The wider destination of Leer offers additional cultural attractions. Evenburg Castle consists of the castle, park and outer bailey. Since May 2014, it has been open with a permanent exhibition on the life and work of an aristocratic family in the 19th century, as well as serving as a centre for garden culture. The focus there is on the three-part estate, the exhibition and garden culture.
