Two different hiking routes provide a clear framework for planning in Fohlenplacken: the Berg-und-Tal Circular Trail N 6 and the challenging Solling Heights Quality Hike. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a hiking stay, you can use your chosen route as a starting point for planning your day.
The Berg-und-Tal Circular Trail N 6
The Berg-und-Tal Circular Trail starts and ends at the Fohlenplacken hiking car park. It follows natural paths, runs alongside historic oak avenues, and passes through wooded heights and mountain meadows; there are also viewpoints along the route. On the way, the loop passes the Sandwäsche information trail and the Fohlenplacken hut. From the hut, views of the sunset are possible. The start and finish are therefore at the same car park; Sandwäsche and the hut are two named points along the loop.
The Solling Heights Quality Hike
The challenging Solling Heights Quality Hike covers 20.6 kilometres and takes approximately six hours. It connects Fohlenplacken with the Mecklenbruch raised bog, the Ahle spring, Neuhaus Wildlife Park, oak avenues and the Hochsolling Tower. Take the approximate walking time into account when planning your day, and check trail conditions and access before setting out. When comparing the two routes, the N 6 is defined primarily by its circular course and shared start and finish point, while the Solling Heights route is defined by its difficulty and time required.
Getting there and parking
Fohlenplacken can be reached by train via Holzminden or Uslar, followed by bus route 510. Check the timetable before travelling. The N 6 uses the hiking car park on the K 50. For the Solling Heights route, a car park is indicated on Fohlenplackener StraĂźe, opposite Hotel WaldschloĂź. The car parks are assigned to different routes, so choose your starting point according to the hike you have planned.
Holzminden as the wider travel destination
Holzminden, the wider travel destination, has its own cultural focus on fragrances. Sensoria – House of Fragrances and Flavours is an experiential museum with an exhibition spread across three floors and 600 square metres, featuring ten themed areas and up to 60 different scents. The exhibition is suitable for visitors of all ages. On the roof, fragrant herbs, unusual plants and an interactive quiz invite you to experience the world of fragrances and flavours outdoors with all your senses.
The Fragrant City Walk also takes you through Holzminden: 17 scent columns lead to the city’s notable buildings and beautiful squares, sharing interesting facts about local history and the significance of fragrances and flavours. These are distinct urban attractions in Holzminden and have a different focus from the hiking trails in Fohlenplacken.
For cyclists, Holzminden is right on the Weser Cycle Route; the Europaradweg R1 and the Weser Cycle Route also intersect there. The bicycle parking garage at Johannismarkt is right on the Weser Cycle Route and only a few steps from the city centre. It offers cyclists a convenient and secure place to leave their bikes during a stopover.
