The landscape around Weenzen can be explored through several specific themes: circular hikes, a cycle route along a former railway line, lakes, woodland and geology. The village also has architectural history and places of remembrance.

Hiking Trails and Cycle Route

The Haidkopfweg, marked “DU4,” starts in Weenzen and forms a 5.8-kilometre circular hiking trail. Between Weinbergersee and the Paradiesteiche, it leads to the Weenzer Bruch gypsum quarry before returning to the starting point.

The Pottlandweg 3 is a longer circular tour whose route passes directly by Weenzen. The 13.3-kilometre Steinbruchweg circular trail is listed as taking around five hours to walk. That is more than twice the distance of the Haidkopfweg; the approximate time estimate provides another point of reference for planning. The Steinbruchweg between Weenzen and Duingen connects to the Geological Nature Trail and the Duingen lake district.

A cycle route between Weenzen and ThĂĽste follows the former railway line. Unlike the circular hiking trails, its focus is on two places as route endpoints. The tours therefore differ not only by mode of transport, but also in their format: a circular route or a connection between two places.

Lakes, Woodland and Geological Traces

Weenzer Bruch, near Weenzen, is a reclaimed former open-cast lignite mining area with four lakes, the Saale following a natural course and extensive woodland. Its reclamation marks the transition from former lignite mining to a landscape of lakes, a river and woodland. The “Weenzer Bruch” Geological Nature Trail is a nature and educational trail that provides information there about the formation, structure and use of the geological units.

Near Weenzen, the FFH area 118 “Duinger Wald mit Doberg und Weenzer Bruch” includes a large woodland area as well as two clay pits with several still waters of different sizes. The landscape descriptions focus on different features: Weenzer Bruch is noted for its four lakes, the Saale and the Geological Nature Trail, while the FFH area is noted for its woodland, clay pits and still waters of varying sizes.

Local History and Remembrance

The New Chapel in Weenzen was built in 1886/1887 in the style of the GrĂĽnderzeit. Its construction date and stylistic classification give local history an architectural focus, distinct from the landscape and trail themes.

During the construction of the sewer system in Weenzen in 1973, a ford on the historic Paderborn military road was identified where it crossed the Thüster Beeke, which flows through the village. The dates serve different purposes: 1886/1887 refers to the chapel’s construction, while 1973 is the year the ford was identified during sewer construction.

Two memorials in the churchyard in Weenzen commemorate local residents who died or went missing in the First and Second World Wars. Along with the chapel and ford, they represent distinct aspects of local history: architectural heritage, a historic transport route, and remembrance of the dead and missing.
