Different themes shape a stay in Söhlde: the Kehrwiederturm in Steinbrück tells the story of the town’s fortifications, the Hoheneggelsen Local History Museum showcases everyday culture, and the Mieckenberg Circular Trail opens up views of forests and fields. There are also activities related to dairy sheep farming and cheese. You can tailor your stay to whichever of these discoveries best suits your interests.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

Söhlde lies between Hildesheim and Braunschweig on the B1 and B444 roads. There is a train station one kilometre outside Hoheneggelsen. Regional Express RE50 connects it with Hildesheim, Braunschweig and Wolfsburg. RVHI also connects the municipality of Söhlde with Hildesheim. If you are travelling by train or bus, check current services and timetables before setting off. You should also check road conditions before your journey.

Local History and Everyday Culture

In Steinbrück, the Kehrwiederturm was built in 1573 as an additional fortification. Its specific year of construction and purpose give the tower a clearly defined place in history. An Evangelical chapel was also established in the tower.

The Hoheneggelsen Local History Museum in the municipality of Söhlde displays household items, club banners, school supplies, tableware, books on cultural history and records. One of its special exhibits is an almost complete shoemaker’s workshop. A kitchen exhibition includes kitchens from different periods; the oldest dates from 1910. The museum thus brings together objects from everyday life and traces of local club and school life. The exhibition layout may change. Before visiting, check what is currently on display and open to visitors.

Circular Trail, Farm Visit and Swimming Pool

The Mieckenberg Circular Trail starts at the church in Nettlingen and climbs into the forest. From there, views extend west towards Wöhle. Later, the trail runs alongside fields and meadows and reaches an eastern viewpoint overlooking the surrounding farmland. The two viewing directions offer different perspectives on the landscape; visibility depends on the season and weather.

At Hof im Greth in Söhlde, the offerings include a guided tour of the dairy sheep farm followed by a tasting of sheep’s cheese. A cheesemaking course and products in the farm shop are also available. Dates and availability may change; check with the farm before booking or visiting.

The Kleinschwimmhalle Söhlde has another distinctive feature: its movable floor allows different water depths to be set. Before visiting, check whether the pool is currently open.

A Different Architectural Accent in the Hildesheim Destination

Within the wider Hildesheim destination, the Fagus Factory in Alfeld provides a distinctive architectural accent. It is considered the first truly modern building and a pioneering work of modern industrial architecture. The Fagus Factory also houses a UNESCO visitor centre with interactive stations about the history of the World Heritage Site and the key ideas behind the World Heritage Convention. The Hildesheim destination thus brings together different cultural and historical perspectives: the fortifications in Steinbrück and modern industrial architecture in Alfeld.
