Hiking trails, a limestone-rich landscape and traces of local lime extraction give Marienhagen its varied character. When choosing a holiday apartment, your plans can help guide your decision: would you mainly like to hike, observe nature or also make time for architectural and local history? The trails differ in their destinations and views, while historic sites and facilities add further points of interest.

Hiking trails with different destinations

Pottland Trail 1, the Panorama Trail, runs directly through Marienhagen and offers views of the Külftal valley. Pottland Trail 3, the Quarry Trail, leads to the geological educational trail at the Weenzer Bruch and to Marienhagen’s disused quarries. One circular route with a specified distance is the 14.4 km Steinburchweg (DU3): it runs from Duingen via Weenzen and back over the Duinger Berg. Between Marienhagen and Duingen, it meets the Ith-Hils hiking trail. Since 2014, the Hans-Froböse-Weg has led to a shelter offering good views of the Külftal valley and the Külf ridge. The Ith-Hils hiking trail is also well signposted in Marienhagen. Check the current signs and trail conditions before setting out.

Limestone quarries and nature

On the limestone-rich soil of Marienhagen’s disused limestone quarries, up to seven different orchid species that are protected by law can be found. The quarry habitats around Marienhagen have also developed into a home for a variety of wildlife and plants, including different lizard species. What you may be able to observe depends on the season; sightings are not guaranteed. Alongside the hiking destinations, the area’s natural character can therefore also be explored through the distinctive habitats of the former quarries.

Church, organ and local history

The church in Marienhagen is a rectangular rubble-stone building with ashlar quoins, built in 1796–98. St Mary’s Church houses an organ built by Philipp Furtwängler & Sohn in 1857 as Opus 42. It has 496 pipes; the original mechanical slider chest for the manual and pedal, two wedge bellows, the treadle mechanism and Furtwängler’s iron action have been preserved. The organ is a listed monument and was awarded the distinction “Organ of the Month” following its restoration.

The local lime works is also covered at the local history museum: opened in 2002, it dedicates a room to the history of the lime works and explains it to visitors in an engaging way. Check access arrangements in advance before visiting. A monument to Friedrich Rogge, the founder of the lime works, stands in the cemetery. One of the two surviving water pumps is located between the house at Hauptstraße 84 and the road. Before the connection to the public water supply, it supplied residents with drinking water; it is no longer in operation. The historic Paderborn Heerstraße also passed through Marienhagen along the route of today’s Bundesstraße 240.

More things to do in the area

The Marienhagen family pool has a swimming pool with a 32-metre water slide, a children’s pool with a sunshade and a kiosk. The Marienhagen art school offers various courses at its building on Hauptstraße, where children and young people learn arts and crafts skills. Alongside the hiking trails, these options offer a choice of swimming and creative courses when planning your stay.
