Holle combines a local history museum with historic buildings and routes through the municipality. During your stay, you can focus on culture, architecture or outdoor activities. The sites and attractions offer a range of experiences: the local history museum explores agriculture, crafts and domestic life, while routes such as the Laves Cultural Trail bring historic buildings and landscapes together.
Museum, Art and Historic Buildings
The Holle Local History Museum displays exhibits on agriculture, crafts, domestic life, school and children, needlework, fossils and local wildlife. Everyday life and working life are represented alongside insights into nature. The variety of exhibits makes the museum a suitable destination if you would like to discover Holle through its local cultural history.
Schloss Söder, a Baroque estate surrounded by water and privately owned, is also located in the municipality of Holle. Visitors cannot enter the palace, but can view it from the outside. This access restriction is important for planning: Schloss Söder can be included as an exterior view, but not as an interior visit.
The old gatehouse with two flanking towers and the old keep remain at Wohldenberg Castle; the keep is a square tower. St. Hubertus Church stands at the castle. Built in 1731, it is dedicated to the patron saint of hunters. Together, the surviving structures and the church offer a tangible insight into the municipality’s architectural and religious history.
The Schloss Derneburg Art Museum presents several contemporary art exhibitions on Saturdays and Sundays. The main building can be visited as part of a guided tour; works in the outbuilding and the sculpture park on the grounds are accessible without a tour. If you would like to see the main building, include the guided tour in your plans. For an art visit, it is also helpful to distinguish between areas that require a guided tour and those that do not.
Hiking Trails and Cycling Route
The Laves Cultural Trail is a historic circular hiking route around Schloss Derneburg and runs through the former English landscape park. Along the way, you will find, among other things, a pyramid mausoleum and a Greek temple. The circular route combines outdoor activity with architecture and a historic park. Numerous hiking trails also lead from Wohldenberg Castle through the forests of Holle.
The Glasshouse serves as a starting point for a hike. It is a 15-minute walk from Derneburg railway station. If you plan to use the station, check current transport connections in advance. This gives you a specific reference point for planning the walk between the station and the starting point, without implying that the hike follows a particular route.
The Holler Church Cycling Route offers a different perspective: it connects five Catholic and seven Protestant churches in the municipality of Holle. The routes have different focuses. The Laves Cultural Trail is a circular hiking route around Schloss Derneburg; the church cycling route focuses on the municipality’s churches as connected destinations. Sottrum Family Park has more than 100 stations and adds another attraction within the municipality.
A Distinct Cultural Focus in the Broader Hildesheim Destination
The broader Hildesheim destination also offers its own cultural attractions, which should be distinguished from the sights in Holle. In Hildesheim, St. Mary’s Cathedral and St. Michael’s Church are UNESCO World Heritage Sites; both were added to the World Heritage List together in 1985. St. Michael’s is a three-aisled basilica in the Ottonian, pre-Romanesque or Early Romanesque style. St. Mary’s Cathedral houses the Bernward Doors, a masterpiece of bronze casting.
The Roemer and Pelizaeus Museum in Hildesheim houses collections of natural history, ethnology, local history, painting and graphic art. These collections and the churches offer a different cultural focus from the Holle Local History Museum or the municipality’s historic routes. Hildesheim is therefore a distinct part of the broader destination, not a description of Holle’s attractions.
