Explore Diekholzen along its varied paths and landscapes: take a walk by the Beuster, go hiking with Tosmar as one possible destination, or cycle along the former Kalibahn railway line. There is also a pilgrims’ hostel with four beds.

Landscapes and paths by the water

Tosmarberg is in the village of Söhre, in Diekholzen. In good weather, the summit offers far-reaching views. There is a guestbook for hikers at the summit cross. On-site facilities can change; if you are interested, check in advance whether the guestbook is still available.

The Schwarze Heide features extensive common heather on its ridge, with scattered oaks and birches along the edges. Its appearance varies with the seasons. The area lies within a nature reserve established to preserve this type of landscape; access requirements may vary.

A footpath with benches runs along the Beuster through much of Diekholzen, making it a pleasant place for a stroll. Path conditions and seating may change. The Warm Beuster and Cold Beuster also join to form a stream within Diekholzen.

Hiking routes in Diekholzen

In the Diekholzen area, the Way of St. James and Rennstieg share part of their route. Signposts and the scallop shell mark the shared stretch; check the signage on site. The Rennstieg runs through Diekholzen from the lung clinic to the western edge of the settlement, then continues towards Nienstedt.

Several circular hiking trails start in Sundern. One route runs from Diekholzen via Ziegenberghoch to Tosmar and onwards towards Bad Salzdetfurth. Another runs from the Sundern area via HammersteinsHĂĽtte towards Petze. A route from the former factory site passes through Mathildenhall towards Haus Escherde. Routes and trail markings can change; check them before setting out on a specific hike.

The Hildesheimer Wald hiking badge links paths and sights in Diekholzen with those in Barienrode, Egenstedt and Söhre. The initiative is still being developed.

Cycling along the former Kalibahn railway line

Diekholzen has an extensive cycling network. An 18-kilometre cycling route along the former Kalibahn railway line connects the Innerste and Leine rivers. In Diekholzen, the former railway line crosses the regional road via a railway bridge and continues through the former Hildesia site into the Hildesheim Forest. As conditions and connections can change, it is worth checking for up-to-date information before setting out.

Accommodation and travel

The pilgrims’ hostel in Diekholzen has four beds, a washroom with a shower and toilet, and a kitchenette. Confirm the facilities and possible accommodation before your trip. Bus route 43 provides a connection to the city bus network. Check the timetable for your travel date before planning your journey.

Culture in the wider Hildesheim destination

In the wider Hildesheim destination, the hiking and landscape attractions are complemented by a distinctive cultural focus. The Fagus Factory in Alfeld is considered the first truly modern building and the pioneering work of modern industrial architecture. It houses a UNESCO visitor centre with interactive displays about the history of the World Heritage site and the core ideas behind the World Heritage Convention.

Hildesheim Cathedral and St. Michael’s Church were jointly added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. St. Michael’s is a three-aisled basilica in the Ottonian, pre-Romanesque or early Romanesque style. Its monumental 13th-century ceiling painting depicts the genealogy of Christ on 1,300 oak boards.
