Königslutter is shaped by its Imperial Cathedral, museums with a wide range of focuses, and Elm-Lappwald Nature Park. These themes can help you choose where to stay: would you mainly like to discover Romanesque architecture and the city’s history, visit guided tours and collections, or set aside time to enjoy the countryside?

Imperial Cathedral and City History

Königslutter Imperial Cathedral was founded by an emperor and was formerly the abbey church of St. Peter and Paul. As an exceptional building, it makes Romanesque architecture a defining cultural theme of the city. Particularly noteworthy are the wide-span groin vaults in the eastern parts of the building: they are among the earliest examples of their kind in German Romanesque architecture.

St. Sebastian and Fabian’s Church also offers a point of reference in time: its tower dates from the 12th century. North of the church, a section of the former city wall about 100 metres long has been preserved. Together with the winding streets, lanes and old half-timbered houses, this history provides the backdrop for a stroll through the small town with its strong medieval character.

In the same building as the Imperial Cathedral, the Cathedral and Stonemasonry Museum explains the building’s history and the traditional craft of stonemasonry. The former cathedral workshop has been presented as a museum and illustrates medieval techniques for constructing religious buildings. At the cathedral, the building itself and the interpretation of its craft and history complement one another.

Museums and City Tours

The Museum of Mechanical Musical Instruments displays a collection of more than 250 objects originating from the former Carlson private collection, which is of international standing. Almost all the instruments are in working order and ready to be played. A guided tour explains the instruments, while demonstrations make the collection an experience for visitors of all ages.

The Königslutter Women’s Culture Museum offers a different cultural focus. Since its founding in 2010, it has collected textile art and organized conferences, courses and exhibitions. Those interested in textile art will find an independent way to engage with the city’s cultural life here, alongside the themes of architecture and music.

Advance booking is required for city tours. The standard tour lasts one hour, while the themed experience tours last an hour and a half. Their themes are beer, half-timbered architecture, legends, strong women and water. This lets you choose between a general tour and a themed approach; guided walks explore the small town’s medieval character, with its winding streets, lanes and old half-timbered houses.

Festivals and Local Beer Tradition

Duckstein Festival is a traditional city festival held every year in early July in honour of Duckstein, the reddish-blond beer specialty. The beer originated in Königslutter. The local connection between the festival and this beer specialty gives the event a special link to the city. As dates and programmes can change, it is advisable to check the details for the relevant travel year in advance.

The traditional Cathedral Festival is also held at the Imperial Cathedral. This family festival features numerous stalls offering, among other things, handicrafts, jewellery, decorative items for the home and garden, and plants. If you would like to combine your visit with the festival, check the specific dates and current selection of stalls before travelling.

Nature in Elm-Lappwald

Königslutter am Elm is shaped by Elm-Lappwald Nature Park and is surrounded by forests, moors and heathland. The nature park’s extensive, well-marked network of trails is ideal for hiking, cycling and exploring. Alongside architecture and culture, you can also choose activities in the countryside. During your stay, you can focus on what interests you without reducing the city to either the Imperial Cathedral alone or the natural landscape alone.
