The Elm Circular Trail 28, “Around Brunsleberfeld,” is a 13-kilometre circular hike with 160 metres of elevation gain. The distance and elevation provide a clear framework for planning your day; you can schedule breaks at your own pace. The route is a specific hiking suggestion for anyone who wants to discover Brunsleberfeld through its paths and landscapes.
Trail character and the former forester’s lodge
The tour follows partly natural paths around the former Brunsleberfeld forester’s lodge, which gives the hike its name. The forester’s lodge itself is not part of the loop: no designated hiking trails lead directly to it. The trail surface is approximately 60 percent gravel, 40 percent paths and 0 percent asphalt. As surfaces can vary locally, check trail conditions before setting out.
Brunsleberfeld was once listed among the forestry districts managed by the Schöningen Forestry Office; the administration was reorganised later. The former function of forester’s lodges can also be put into context: they were designed for self-sufficiency. In addition to the main house, they included stables and arable and pasture land. This historical perspective adds context to the former forester’s lodge without making it a destination on the hike.
The Schunter spring, views and a picnic stop
At the Schunter spring, an information board explains the formation and course of the Schunter. Water rises from below at the karst spring and feeds the river; the visible volume of water varies depending on the time of year. When crossing the pasture, the route passes the Schunter’s largest spring pool. Depending on the weather and time of year, the hike also offers views of the Harz Mountains and the Harz foothills. Eitzumer Blick is a picnic stop along the route.
The Hagenweg, known as the Tetzelweg, is also a landmark in the trail area: it leads west from there. The tour thus brings together different landscape and trail connections, while the Schunter spring and spring pool provide a particular focal point. If you are planning a break along the way, you can consider Eitzumer Blick, the picnic stop named on the route.

Cultural history in the wider destination of Helmstedt
The wider destination of Helmstedt also offers cultural-historical and archaeological attractions. In the town of Helmstedt, the Juleum Novum was built between 1592 and 1597 as a palace-like Renaissance building; it was the assembly hall of the former university. Climbing the Juleum Tower involves 153 steps and takes place from April to October on the first Saturday of each month, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Check the date before visiting.
At the Schöningen Research Museum, you can see the Schöningen spears close to where they were found. They were left at the site around 300,000 years ago and discovered in 1994; excavations are still taking place there today. The Schöningen adventure trail runs for 2.5 kilometres from Burgplatz to the research museum and has eight stops with large information boards. So, in the wider destination of Helmstedt, you can choose from cultural-historical and archaeological highlights as well as the hike near Brunsleberfeld.
