A circular hiking trail leads to an access point to the Krelingen stone tomb, which is considered evidence of the region’s early settlement. The Am Krummen Winkel settlement also has a historical connection: it is one of the settlements established in Düshorn after the Second World War. In the surrounding area, you can discover nature and culture while hiking and cycling.
Woodland, wetland habitat and heath
The Wedden is a small woodland within the village, near the church. This area also includes a wetland habitat and a large orchard meadow. The larger wooded areas are the Hohe Heide to the southeast of Düshorn and the Beetenbusch to the southwest. While these two areas are described as large forests, the Wedden combines woodland, a wetland habitat and an orchard meadow.
The Krelingen Heath is another landscape highlight. It is characterised by juniper bushes and typical heather; the heather blooms violet from mid-August into September, although the timing can vary slightly from year to year. A hiking trail around the heath leads through the heathland landscape. The wooded areas and open heath therefore offer different settings for excursions in the surrounding area.
Hiking and cycling around Düshorn
The varied countryside around Düshorn invites you to go hiking and cycling. Two circular hiking trails can be compared by their stated length: The Düshorn D3 is 13 kilometres long and leads from Düshorn via Krusenhausen and Krelingen, as well as the Alte Celler Weg, back to the starting point. The route also goes to an access point to the Krelingen stone tomb. At 15 kilometres, the D4 is slightly longer; its circular route runs from Düshorn via Krelingen, Bockhorn and Bad Fallingbostel-Süd back to Düshorn.
The D5 offers a different landscape: it passes through fields and woodland before reaching Meinerdingen and Rödershöfen. Burial mounds are signposted in the Uhlenbusch. If you would like to include cultural history in an excursion, you can combine places like these with a hike rather than choosing routes based solely on their length.
Historic traces and local culture
The earliest reference to the Düshorn parish is found in the Lüneburg feudal register of 1021. Düshorn church also houses a baptismal angel dating from around 1730. The Düshorn village museum presents the historical development of the population in the Lüneburg Heath, offering another way to explore the region’s history.
A historic thatched-roof building from the 19th century stands by the Krelingen Heath; it was relocated here from Ebbingen. The reconstructed bee fence on the heath is also a notable cultural landmark: it is considered one of the last cultural remnants of historic basket beekeeping in northern Germany. In late summer, the Krelingen village community association holds its annual “Singing in the Krelingen Heath” event. If this event fits your travel plans, check the specific dates in advance.
Swimming and regional products
As an alternative to hiking and culture days, the Düshorn lido offers a 200-metre-long beach of fine sand. The extensive water area is also suitable for longer swims. The lido is accessible from Düshorn on foot or by bike. Düshorn village shop offers a wide range of regional products, adding a local shopping stop to the excursion options.
