Schwarmstedt is a recognised holiday resort on the edge of the Lüneburg Heath and lies just outside Hanover. When choosing where to stay, it is worth considering what you would like to combine during your visit: cycling routes cross the town, the Leine flows into the Aller to the north, and a farmers’ market and several cultural venues offer further attractions.

Cycling routes and water on the Leine

The LĂĽneburg Heath Cycle Route and the Leine-Heath Cycle Route cross Schwarmstedt. One suggested route is a 54-kilometre circular tour from Schwarmstedt through woodland and meadows towards Gilten. Its circular route and length provide specific points of reference for planning your own trip; check the route details before setting off.

Schwarmstedt lies on the Leine, which flows into the Aller north of the town. The Leine harbour has a landing stage and is a starting point for waterway travellers. At the harbour entrance stands “PaarPferd”, a bronze sculpture by local artist Siegfried Steege. Waterway travellers can stay overnight in the building belonging to the Schwarmstedt Angling Club. Confirm overnight arrangements before you arrive.

Farmers’ market and regional produce

The farmers’ market has been held every Friday afternoon on the Town Hall Square since 1996. Farmers and direct sellers from the Aller-Leine Valley offer their products there. If the market fits your travel plans, check the date before you arrive.

History and architecture

The history of the Uhle-Hof in Schwarmstedt dates back to the 15th century. On the grounds, a bronze sculpture depicts the 13 localities of the Schwarmstedt collective municipality as owls. Also located there is “Der Uhle-Boom”, a bronze sculpture by local artist Siegfried Steege. Since 1986, the Uhle-Hof has been used for public and cultural events as well as weddings.

St. Lawrence’s Church in Schwarmstedt was first mentioned in a deed of gift dating to around 1150. Frescoes from the 15th century were uncovered in 1971/72. Historic furnishings include a baptismal font dating from 1528 and a Renaissance pulpit from 1608.

The Alte Burg is a rare type of Baroque half-timbered building, constructed in 1632. It is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. The Rittergut von Lenthe is also privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. Bear this restriction in mind when planning a visit.

Music museum and getting there

Harry’s Museum of Mechanical Music displays a collection of mechanical musical instruments and presents masterpieces of mechanical music from its origins up to 1920. The museum adds a different cultural focus to the historic buildings.

For travel by car, Schwarmstedt has an exit on the A 7 and is located on Federal Highway 214 between Nienburg/Weser and Celle. The Schwarmstedt–Lindwedel–Bennemühlen railway line is included in the services available to holders of GVH Mobility Cards. Check the current fare conditions before travelling.
