When hiking from the Oberhaverbeck car park towards Wilsede, the Oberhaverbeck heath is the first heathland area you see. There are also trails of varying lengths, a viewpoint, and insights into local building culture and the area’s heath beekeeping—a mix that makes Oberhaverbeck a distinctive destination for a nature-focused getaway with a range of interests to explore.

Hiking on two scales

The 11-kilometre Machandel Adventure Trail runs from Oberhaverbeck via Wilsede to Döhle through the car-free Lüneburg Heath Nature Reserve. The route invites families to take part and explore. Its length and named stops provide a clear framework for the tour if you are looking for a specific hiking route with a playful element.

The Heidschnuckenweg is on a much larger scale: the 223-kilometre route runs between Hamburg and Celle through the heathland of the Lüneburg Heath and through the car-free nature reserve. The villages named along the route include Wilsede and Niederhaverbeck and Oberhaverbeck in the municipality of Bispingen. When comparing the two trail options, Wilsede is a place name they have in common, but the routes differ considerably in length and scope: the Machandel Adventure Trail runs from Oberhaverbeck to Döhle, while the Heidschnuckenweg connects the wider region between Hamburg and Celle.

Heathland and orientation

Numerous hiking and cycling trails run through the Oberhaverbeck heath. The heathland is therefore a shared landscape setting for two different ways of getting around: on foot or by bike.

The hiking car park in Oberhaverbeck is an access point for the “Wilseder Berg” heathland loop. From the summit of Turmberg, you can enjoy expansive views of the Lüneburg Heath Nature Reserve. These offer two different perspectives: the loop is a named hiking route, while Turmberg is associated with views of the protected area. When planning, you can decide whether the route itself or a viewpoint is your main priority.

Playful and cultural discoveries

Free smartphone rallies using the “Actionbound” app start at the Oberhaverbeck visitor car park. They combine tricky puzzles, playful challenges and information. If you would like to include a playful exploration in your stay, this format offers a different focus from the hiking routes described above.

Oberhaverbeck still has examples of the “Wandständer” barn type. Nearby, the free “Bienenwelten” (Worlds of Bees) exhibition about heath beekeeping is located in the nature information centre in Niederhaverbeck. These offer two different cultural insights: a type of building still found in Oberhaverbeck, and an exhibition on heath beekeeping. Alongside the trails and landscape, you can also take local architecture and cultural themes into account when choosing your destination.
