The Naturerlebniswerk Vierhöfen is a day-trip destination in the Lüneburg Heath for families, children’s groups and people interested in nature. Woodland, meadow and pond biotopes, an educational trail and seasonal learning programmes shape what the site offers. When planning your visit, it is worth first exploring the nature-related features on the grounds, then looking at other destinations in the wider Harburg travel region.

Experience nature on the grounds

Visitors can experience woodland, meadow and pond as distinct biotopes on the grounds. The pond is fed exclusively by groundwater and precipitation. Both the different habitats and the pond’s water supply are therefore specific nature-related features of the site.

A description from 2026 mentions an educational trail with ten stations. It explains artificial habitats, their inhabitants and how they are protected. The open education programme runs from spring to autumn and caters to everyone from young children to school and university students and adults. Keep this seasonal timeframe in mind when planning your visit.

Group programmes can include workshops, seminars and team-building activities. The grounds also provide space for yoga and meditation in nature. The reopening of the Naturerlebniswerk in August 2023 made new facilities available to people interested in nature. Together, these offerings give the site several distinct focuses: natural biotopes, learning and activities in nature.

Getting there and facilities

The Naturerlebniswerk is largely accessible; seating and toilets are available. The grounds can be reached on foot or by bicycle from Radbruch or Vierhöfen. There is parking for cars on the site, but spaces are limited. The travel options are therefore distinct: walking and cycling routes lead from both villages to the Naturerlebniswerk, while parking at the destination is limited.

More nature and cultural attractions in the wider Harburg travel region

The wider Harburg travel region offers more than the Naturerlebniswerk. Harburg district encompasses the Elbe marshes, the Harburg Hills, the North Heath and, above all, the Lüneburg Heath. In the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park, bogs, ancient forests, heathland streams and rivers are part of a protected cultural landscape that visitors can explore. Villages with old farmsteads and thatched-roof houses are also protected elements of this landscape.

Cyclists can explore a dense network of routes across Harburg district, with 1,000 kilometres of signposted tourist cycling trails. Hiking routes also vary considerably in length: the Heidschnuckenweg, which opened in 2012, is 223 kilometres long and runs from Hamburg through the districts of Harburg, Heidekreis and Celle and across more than 30 heathland areas in the North and South Heath. It is divided into 13 stages. Twelve connecting Heideschleifen trails range from 1.4 to 20.9 kilometres and offer a separate selection alongside the full route.

Other nature destinations offer different highlights. More than 1,200 animals live at Lüneburg Heath Wildlife Park, including Siberian tigers, wolves and snow leopards. Schwarze Berge Wildlife Park features a 45-metre-high Elbe View Tower in a 50-hectare park with hills, valleys and lakes. At Lüneburg Heath Barefoot Park, visitors can walk over natural surfaces laid out in different ways and stop at activity stations such as smell boxes and a tree telephone.

Culture is also part of the Harburg region: Bossard Art Site preserves Expressionist wall paintings and interior furnishings in their original context. Visitors interested in rural architecture will also find protected villages with old farmsteads and thatched-roof houses in the cultural landscape. The “Museum Kiekeberg” stop is directly in front of the open-air museum at Kiekeberg and is served by several HVV bus routes. Check the current timetable when planning your visit.
