Discover Hollenstedt from two perspectives: through its historic buildings and the routes that offer different ways to explore the area. The approximately 1,000-year-old St. Andrew’s Church, the neighboring sexton’s house and a surviving ringwall provide historic points of interest. There are several hiking routes, including a designated half-day tour along the Este.

Church, Sexton’s House and Historic Traces

St. Andrew’s Church stands in the center of Hollenstedt and is approximately 1,000 years old. Right next to it is the sexton’s house, a three-bay farmhouse built in 1669. The wooden bell tower also belongs to the church; it was renovated in 2001. Together, these buildings offer a tangible introduction to the town’s history without requiring you to confuse different historical periods.

A restored ringwall dating from 804 has been preserved in Hollenstedt. Historically, the town was once a market and church center between Buxtehude and Tostedt. This context complements a look at the individual buildings: the church, the 17th-century house and the ringwall represent different historical points of interest at the same destination.

Hiking, Cycling and Horse Riding

Hollenstedt has an extensive network of hiking trails, as well as extensive cycling and riding trail networks. When planning, consider what kind of tour you would like to take. The Este Hiking Trail runs from Bötersheim via Hollenstedt and Moisburg to Buxtehude. The Estetal W7 half-day tour, by contrast, is listed as 10 kilometers long and runs from Hollenstedt along the Este. The W7 therefore offers a specific, measured route for a half-day, while the Este Hiking Trail connects several towns.

The Este Ost tour has its own highlights: it leads to a historic ringwall and passes through two viaducts. The trails on the Este Ost tour are mostly natural paths and have no steep inclines; sturdy footwear is recommended. The route is fully signposted and marked. Check the signs on site before setting out, as trail conditions may change with the weather or maintenance.

For orientation in the surrounding area, the Alte Burg ringwall site lies about 1.5 kilometers south of Hollenstedt and can be reached via the Este Hiking Trail. From the “Am Stinnberg” school parking lot, the Este Hiking Trail leads there after about 2.5 kilometers. These two figures provide different points of reference: an approximate location south of town and the route distance from a named parking lot.

More Options for Your Plans

From Hollenstedt, canoe trips on the Este to Moisburg and Buxtehude are possible. If you are planning such a trip, check the current water regulations and the availability of a provider in advance. This keeps your plans aligned with current conditions without assuming a specific departure time or provider.

Hollenstedt’s outdoor swimming pool has two 1-meter diving boards and a 3-meter diving board. This is a useful detail if you would like to include swimming in your stay; check current opening hours before visiting. The tennis facility has both indoor and outdoor courts. If you are interested in playing tennis, check access arrangements in advance.
