Hamelin offers everything from the architectural history of the Weser Renaissance to trails for walking, hiking and jogging. This is useful if you want to plan a stay not only around sights, but also around the balance of city life and exercise you’re looking for.

Renaissance and Civic History

The Rattenfängerhaus (Pied Piper House) was built in 1602/03 and displays all the stylistic elements of the Weser Renaissance. The Hochzeitshaus (Wedding House) was built between 1610 and 1617 as a venue for celebrations and festivities for Hamelin’s citizens. Both buildings date from the early 17th century, but represent different perspectives: the Rattenfängerhaus is notable for its Weser Renaissance stylistic elements, while the Hochzeitshaus is distinguished by its original function as a civic venue. Hamelin’s architectural history can thus be explored through both architecture and the buildings’ use at the time.

Old Town Trails and Getting Around

There are several ways to find your bearings in the Old Town. The Ratten-Steine form a circular walking route through Hamelin’s Old Town, passing important buildings and sights. The digital city tour provides information about the sights and helps you prepare for your visit; it supports your planning, while the Ratten-Steine describe a route through the Old Town. Osterstraße is now a pedestrian zone and one of the main shopping streets in Hamelin’s Old Town. At the Hochzeitshaus, the carillon plays the Weser Song at 9:35 a.m. and the Pied Piper Song at 11:35 a.m. every day. Check the performance times before your trip.

The Pied Piper Theme and Planning Your Visit

The Pied Piper open-air play is associated with the terrace of the Hochzeitshaus in Hamelin’s Old Town and the legend of the children’s disappearance. Performance dates vary by season; check the dates for your travel period.

City Forest and Hiking Trails

Hamelin also offers a range of options for getting active. The 1,300-hectare Hamelin City Forest has a well-developed, signposted network of trails for walking, hiking and jogging. The Finkenborn-Riepen circular hiking trail (HM1) in Klüt Forest is a more specific option for a hike: in 2025, it was certified as a “Quality Trail Wanderbares Deutschland – Dream Tour.” Check current trail conditions locally before setting out. This lets you choose between a network of trails for different activities and a named circular hiking trail.
