The Itterbecker Heide, trails through woodland and former moorland, the outdoor pool and local cultural sites give Itterbeck several distinct focal points. When planning, you can give nature, exercise and history separate emphasis: not every stay has to combine all these themes in a single route.
Itterbecker Heide: sandy heathland and nature conservation
The Itterbecker Heide lies northwest of Itterbeck. It has been protected as a nature reserve since August 23, 2007. The Itterbecker Heide in the County of Bentheim covers around 85 hectares and is one of the largest contiguous sandy heathland areas in southwestern Lower Saxony. Dunes and hummocky ridges formed by glacial deposits shape the landscape; it includes dwarf-shrub heath, juniper heath and dry grassland. Walking paths run along the heath. The Egger Riese, a heavy erratic boulder from the last Ice Age, is also located there. A nature outing lets you explore the protected heath, its different landscape forms and a geological landmark as separate points of interest.
Routes through woodland, heath and former moorland
Landerlebnisroute II runs through the woodland between Uelsen and Itterbeck. It passes the source of the Itter, goes through the village of Itterbeck and into the Itterbecker Heide; it also crosses the former Wilsumer and Wielener moors. Grafschafter Spurensuche is another route around Itterbeck, marked and designated as family-friendly. Landerlebnisroute II is characterized by its landscape and village stops, while Spurensuche is distinguished by its markings and classification. Route information may change; check the current route before setting out.
The outdoor pool as a different part of your day
The Itterbeck outdoor pool offers a different focus from the trails: its outdoor pool measures 11 × 18 meters and is divided into swimming and non-swimming areas. The complex also includes a sunbathing lawn and facilities for ball games and table tennis. This makes it possible to plan a day at the pool differently from an outing focused mainly on the heath or a route. As information about facilities can change, check the current conditions before visiting.
Local heritage farm and chapel in Egge
The local heritage farm in Itterbeck is an open-air museum at Schoolstege 5. A café is open during the museum season; if you plan to visit the café, bear in mind that it is seasonal. The Evangelical Reformed Chapel is in Egge, about 3 km from Itterbeck. It was formally dedicated on June 4, 1903. The two sites offer different points of interest: the café at the local heritage farm is seasonal, while the chapel’s historic dedication is its main feature.
The wider landscape setting
Across the County of Bentheim, heathland, raised and lowland bogs, wooded ridges and the Vechte River valley alternate. This overview covers more landscape forms than a specific itinerary in Itterbeck, where the heath and local trail options provide their own starting points for planning the day.
