When planning your trip, Georgsdorf offers several distinct points of interest: a historic windmill with exhibitions and buckwheat products, the Georgsdorfer Moor nature reserve, and farmer’s golf at TSV Georgsdorf. The Altes Pastorat, the oldest building in the village, is another option. You can weigh up whether mill history, the landscape or an active outing best suits your interests.

Windmill history and buckwheat

The Georgsdorf windmill is a brick gallery Dutch mill with a thatched roof, built in 1875. Twelve Georgsdorf farmers joined forces to build it at a cost of around 6,500 thalers. Its design and materials give the mill building its own historic character; its origins also reflect the initiative of local farmers.

The mill complex includes a half-timbered barn used as an exhibition space for historic tools and machinery. The miller’s house, built in 1904, features a photo exhibition on shipping along the Emsland Canal’s left-hand section. The two themes complement each other without showing the same things: one focuses on tools and machinery, the other on canal shipping. Visits to the windmill outside regular opening hours can be arranged by telephone.

When it comes to buckwheat, distinguish between products for sale and dishes that require advance ordering. Buckwheat flour is sold at the mill on Saturdays during opening hours; it is also available during business hours at the neighboring Grenzlandmarkt. Bookweiten-Jan Hinnerk, a traditional buckwheat dish, can be served in the miller’s house with traditional accompaniments if ordered in advance. Original buckwheat pancakes are also considered a regional specialty. This links the mill theme to specific culinary offerings, each with different conditions: flour for sale, a dish to order in advance, and a regional specialty.

Altes Pastorat and Georgsdorfer Moor

The Altes Pastorat dates from 1866 and is the oldest building in Georgsdorf. The Georgsdorfer Moor nature reserve offers a different perspective on the area: it is a remnant of the former raised bogs of the Bourtanger Moor. The aim of managing the protected area is to preserve or restore open moorland, wet heathland, small bodies of water, moor lakes, scrub and moorland forests.

Farmer’s golf at TSV Georgsdorf

As an active alternative to visiting the mill and exploring local history, try farmer’s golf at TSV Georgsdorf. The game is played with a large plastic ball and a thick wooden club on a course with ten holes. Farmer’s golf can be played regardless of age or sporting ability. Packages can be arranged on request for groups of twelve or more. If you want to use this group option, be sure to include an inquiry in your planning.
