Emlichheim combines walks along the Vechte with sensory experiences and cycling routes whose themes range from oil to art. The small woodland area of Denne lies right on the Vechte and invites visitors to enjoy extended walks. This offers a mix of riverside scenery, things to do in town and cycling routes with different themes when choosing a destination.

By the river and in the town centre

Denne is a destination for extended walks right on the Vechte. The Sound Trail is in town, opposite the VVV. It invites visitors to put their senses to the test. There is a boules court next to the VVV. The two attractions each offer something different: the Sound Trail is about sensory perception, while the boules court provides space to play boules.

The historic Haus Ringerbrüggen is located behind the town hall and has been renovated. The TOP Emlichheim, a “Tourist Information Point”, is located at the house. The house and information point provide another place to visit in the town centre, alongside the VVV and Sound Trail.

Cycling with different themes

The 32-kilometre Oil Route is a cycling route in the Samtgemeinde Emlichheim that focuses on oil. It leads from the centre of Emlichheim to the oil field and continues across a weir on the Dutch side of the oil field. The route thus combines a specific length with a clearly defined theme. Check local route conditions before setting out.

Another option is the Border Route, which runs from Emlichheim through the Vechtetal near Echteler and Heesterkante. On the kunstwegen route, visitors can experience sculptures and installations from their bicycles. These routes differ in their stated themes and paths; the information offers a way to choose based on their content, without assuming that every route is the same kind of outing.

The wider Grafschaft Bentheim area

The Grafschaft Bentheim features a mix of heathland, raised and lowland bogs, wooded ridges and the Vechte river valley. Itterbecker Heide is a nature reserve covering around 85 hectares. kunstwegen is also part of the regional offering: this open-air museum of contemporary art, nature and history stretches for more than 180 kilometres through the Vechtetal, with more than 80 sculpture projects along the route.

For cyclists, the Grafschafter Fietsentour offers a different scale: its main route is about 220 kilometres long and passes through all the municipalities in the district. By comparison, the 32-kilometre Oil Route is shorter and focuses on a specific theme. This makes it possible to choose between an individual themed route and a longer tour covering the wider region.

The Grafschaft Bentheim also has cultural attractions. The Nordhorn Shipping Museum covers 350 square metres and displays, among other things, historic ship models, nautical instruments, nautical charts and information about shipbuilding. The Nordhorn City Museum uses three listed industrial buildings for its permanent and special exhibitions. These attractions add maritime and industrial history to the region’s story, while Denne, the Sound Trail and the Oil Route are defining themes of Emlichheim.
