A prominent natural attraction in Wolfshagen im Harz is the former Diabas quarry. The “Trail of Stones” themed trail runs for about five kilometers around the former, restored quarry. The site is now a large biotope. The quarry is home to the so-called nesting cliff, which is 47 meters high and surrounded by small ponds fed by a spring. The Fossecken viewing platform is on the trail around the quarry. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Hiking Trails and Nature Experiences

The published distances provide a clear guide when choosing a route: the “Around Burghagen” nature trail is 3.5 kilometers long and is especially recommended for children. The easy circular hiking trail 2 is 6.2 kilometers long and loops around Wolfshagen, with views and pastureland along the way. Circular hiking trail 3 passes through gently rolling countryside, with viewpoints and meadows along the way. The routes therefore differ not only in length, but also in the landscapes described.

The Wolfshagen nature trail passes pastureland and combines woodland themes with educational displays along the way: information boards cover forest animals and trees, and there is also a large insect hotel, information about the forest with photos of native animals, and display cases with nesting boxes. The trail starts and ends at the parking lot at Jahnskamp. Check trail and parking conditions in advance. Other nature experiences in Wolfshagen include herb walks about witches’ herbs and guided night hikes.

Viewpoints and Local History

The viewpoints each offer something different. From the “Steile Wiese” pavilion, you can see the southern landscape conservation area; the Schäder pavilion offers panoramic views of Wolfshagen. The Schäder spring is fed by clear mountain water. The “Wolfshagen Panoramic View” is a worthwhile detour, with views of the town and surrounding mountains. The Heimberg viewing platform makes it possible to take a break and enjoy the view; it is also the site of a stamp point for the Harz Hiking Pin.

Local history offers another point of interest: Wolfshagen im Harz was first mentioned in a document in 1316 as the woodcutter and charcoal-burner village of “Wulveshagen.” Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg was born here in 1797. The Steinway Trail invites visitors to learn more about the Steinways’ history.
