Bad Harzburg can be explored through several distinct themes: forest knowledge at the HarzWaldHaus, trails with views of the town, historical exhibitions and the saltwater spa. In the spa gardens, the HarzWaldHaus is right next to the Burgberg cable car; other attractions each focus on their own themes.

Nature and views

The HarzWaldHaus is an interactive forest exhibition featuring information about the lynx and a formicarium. The Burgberg cable car station is right next door. It reaches the Großer Burgberg in three minutes—a clearly defined ride, distinct from a longer visit to an exhibition or time spent on a trail.

The Harz treetop walk offers a different experience: it is 1,000 metres long and runs more than 20 metres above the ground. Its stations explore the origins of the universe, Earth and life, as well as the nature and culture of the Harz. Its length, height and themes give the visit its own character; the trail combines nature with educational content.

The HARZ TreeTop Cableway also takes visitors through the forest, carrying passengers from the Burgberg in the direction of the Harz treetop walk. This offers different ways to get around—from a trail above the treetops to a ride through the forest. You can choose between the attractions according to your interests, without treating them as a single programme.

Circular trail or historic long-distance hiking trail

The Ringwanderweg and the Kaiserweg are two different options for walks and hikes. The Ringwanderweg starts at the spa gardens, circles Bad Harzburg and combines nature experiences with views of the town’s districts. The Kaiserweg, by contrast, is a historic long-distance hiking trail that begins in Bad Harzburg. If you are looking for a circular route with links to the town, you can follow the Ringwanderweg; the Kaiserweg offers a starting point for a longer-distance trail.

This distinction can help with planning your day: the circular trail is described as a route around Bad Harzburg, while the Kaiserweg is a long-distance hiking trail that starts in town. The Burgberg cable car and the TreeTop Cableway add two rides, with different destinations and routes, to these walking trails. Check the current conditions for your route before setting out.

Local history at the Remise

The museum in the Remise is housed in the former carriage shed of the Harzburg Forestry Office, a protected historic building. It displays historical exhibits on the town’s history. The museum also includes the Burgberg Room, with archaeological finds from the old Harzburg Castle. This means that one building presents general themes from the town’s history alongside finds connected to the Burgberg.

In the Badepark, the historic Wandelhalle is a place for health and socialising. It adds another historic site in Bad Harzburg to the museum’s subject matter. The Bad Harzburg saltwater spa offers a different focus: it uses natural brine drawn from a depth of 840 metres. If you want to divide your days between trails, exhibitions and the spa, you’ll find several distinct themes to help plan your trip.

Getting there and finding accommodation

Bad Harzburg can be reached by bus, train or car via the A369, B4 and B6. As conditions along the way can change, it is a good idea to check your route before setting off. These themes can help guide your plans without prescribing a set order for your visits.
