Lake Seeburg is a natural sinkhole lake, part of a nature reserve, and a focal point for nature observation and local history. In Seeburg, you can combine different aspects of a stay: the lakeside landscape, information about protecting habitats, and traces of the past. Depending on whether you want to focus mainly on nature or local history, you can choose different themes for your visit.

Lake, wetlands and wildlife

Lake Seeburg formed around 10,000 years ago as a natural sinkhole lake. The nature reserve includes the lake and the surrounding wetlands, including swamp woodland, wet scrub, grassland, reed beds and sedge marshes. The protected landscape therefore includes a range of wetland habitats as well as open water.

Along the paths, information boards explain aquatic plants, wildlife, and nature conservation and restoration measures. If you are interested in how a protected landscape is managed, these offer another perspective on the lake and its surroundings. Waterbirds are especially easy to observe around Seeburg and Bernshausen. Seeburg is on the western shore and Bernshausen on the eastern shore; visitors can reach the lakeshore in both towns.

Activities on the water

Rowboats and pedal boats are rented on site daily from May to October. This lets you explore Lake Seeburg from the water, too. The Lake Seeburg Nature Information Centre is located by the boat rental; an underwater window there offers a view of the lake’s underwater world. Check boat availability and the latest information about the centre before your visit.

A family-friendly cycling tour around Lake Seeburg can be followed by swimming, minigolf or volleyball. These activities offer different ways to spend time after your bike ride. As availability on site may change, it is a good idea to check what is currently available before your visit.

Local history and regional products

St. Martin’s Church in Seeburg is connected with the past of the Eichsfeld community and its religious roots by the lake. A chapel on the site of today’s St. Martin’s Church was first mentioned around 950. The Legend of Count Isang offers another kind of story: in it, a castle sinks beneath the lake. In Seeburg, you can encounter both an early historical reference and a local legend.

Regional produce can also add a distinctive touch to your visit. The farm shop at the Schwalbennest organic farm in Seeburg sells Eichsfeld sausage specialities from organic farming, directly from the producer. If you plan to visit the farm shop, check availability before your visit.

Göttingen as the wider destination

In the wider destination of Göttingen, the Forum Wissen offers insights into ongoing research and teaching. The permanent exhibition “Spaces of Knowledge” covers 1,400 square metres. More than 1,400 objects from the collections of the University of Göttingen are displayed in twelve rooms; the exhibition lets visitors explore how knowledge is produced. The Old Botanical Garden in Göttingen offers a different focus: it was established in 1736 as a “hortus medicus”, or medicinal garden. There, you can explore historic greenhouses, tropical vegetation in the rainforest house and the Alpine garden.
