Scheden can be explored through two specific interests: the legacy of Johann Joachim Quantz and trails that pass through the town. The Wetenborn church ruins, a historic site east of Scheden, are another nearby point of interest. This brings together local culture, hiking opportunities and a destination in the surrounding area for your trip planning.

Quantz and Concert Culture in Scheden

The Johann Joachim Quantz Memorial is located in a memorial niche below Quantzplatz on QuantzstraĂźe. The bronze sculpture depicts Johann Joachim Quantz and was created by sculptor Georg Arfmann. The memorial was inaugurated in 1991. For visitors interested in Quantz, the memorial and the exhibition offer two different points of connection: a sculpture in town and an exhibition in the church.

The Johann Joachim Quantz Exhibition is located in St. Mark's Church and opened on 5 June 2004. The church is regularly used by the GSO as a concert venue and also hosts smaller concerts by the brass band and church choirs. If you are planning to attend a concert, check the current schedule; to visit the exhibition, confirm visiting arrangements in advance.

Hiking Trails and the Wetenborn Church Ruins

The European long-distance hiking trail 6 (E6) passes through Tiefenbrunn, Scheden, Hann. MĂĽnden, Dahlenrode and Witzenhausen. The Studentenpfad X13 passes through Tiefenbrunn, Scheden, Hann. MĂĽnden and Spiekershausen. The two route sequences share the same course as far as Hann. MĂĽnden and differ in the other places listed: Dahlenrode and Witzenhausen are on the E6, while Spiekershausen is on the X13. This is a useful point of comparison if you want to understand the routes by where they go.

The Wetenborn church ruins lie east of Scheden. They are the excavated and restored remains of a church belonging to a medieval village that was abandoned around 1400. From Scheden, access is via a paved farm track, the Apfelbaumallee, followed by a footpath. You can take this change in path type into account when planning your visit; check current access before you go.

Culture and Nature in Göttingen

In the wider destination of Göttingen, the Forum Wissen offers insights into ongoing research and teaching. Its permanent exhibition, “Spaces of Knowledge,” covers 1,400 square metres and lets visitors trace the processes through which knowledge is created. More than 1,400 objects from the collections of the University of Göttingen are on display in twelve rooms. The Göttingen Municipal Museum has been housed in Hardenberger Hof, the last surviving aristocratic palace in Göttingen, since 1897. For the time being, it is showing the exhibition “City. Power. Faith. Göttingen in the 16th Century.” Check before planning your visit whether it is still on.

Göttingen’s architecture can also be viewed from different perspectives. The Great Hall of the German Theatre has 488 seats in the stalls and across three tiers and is considered an architectural gem of the city. The Old Town Hall was built in 1270 and served as a centre for council and court meetings as well as trade. The Assembly Hall of the Georg August University is a central university building and an example of neoclassical architecture. It houses the Karzer, the historic university prison. The Gänseliesel statue has stood in the market square since 1901 and is Göttingen’s landmark.

Göttingen has other points of interest for garden and landscape enthusiasts. The Old Botanical Garden was founded in 1736 as a “hortus medicus,” or medicinal garden. Visitors can explore historic greenhouses, tropical vegetation in the rainforest house and the Alpine garden. Walking, hiking and cycling are all possible in the Hainberg city forest. The wildlife enclosure at Kehr is home to wild boar and fallow deer, and a three-kilometre circular path runs around it. In Göttingen, you can choose between different natural settings: a garden, a city forest and a wildlife enclosure.
