The hills of Alten and Neuengleichen gave Gleichen its name. Both were crowned by castles founded by the Counts of Reinhausen around 1100; after the Thirty Years’ War, they became picturesque ruins. The name thus points to a specific historical starting point. The landscape is also distinctive and varied: forests, rocks, archaeological traces and seasonal culture each add a different dimension to a trip to Gleichen.
Forest, Rocks and Hiking
Gleichen is one of the hiking areas in the Göttingen region. In the Reinhäuser Wald forest lies the Hurkutstein, a man-made hermit’s cave. The Jägersteine are a group of sandstone rocks on the edge of a mountain spur, also in the Reinhäuser Wald. Their features differ: the Hurkutstein is notable for its artificial shaping, while the Jägersteine are known for their sandstone rocks and position on the mountain spur.
In Reinhausen, the Bielstein lies beside the village road: a rocky spur about 100 metres long. The Mackenröder Spitze adds a lookout tower with a remarkable view of the Harz to the hiking options. From Groß Lengden, you can reach it via the Spinne pass in the Groß Lengder Wald forest. This brings different rock formations and a named viewpoint into focus as distinct aspects of the landscape.
Archaeological Traces and Castle History
Evidence of settlement from the Mesolithic and Iron Age has been found at the Jägersteine; the rocks are designated an archaeological monument. The Lengder Burg consists of two separate castle complexes on a ridge. Finds from the western complex are dated approximately to the 4th to 3rd century BC. Stonework at the Bielstein includes medieval round-arched niches, sharpening grooves and two disc crosses.
The historical connections thus span settlement traces from the Mesolithic and Iron Age through to medieval stonework. The dating of the Lengder Burg applies to finds from its western complex; the site itself comprises two independent castle complexes. Together with the castle ruins on Alten and Neuengleichen, these places form a multifaceted picture: they represent different structures and periods, rather than a single castle site.
Seasonal Stage and Industrial Heritage
During the summer season, the WaldbĂĽhne Bremke presents Grimm fairy tales every weekend. If you plan to attend a performance, check the specific dates before your trip. The Historische Spinnerei Gartetal offers a different cultural experience: as an industrial museum of significance beyond the region, it combines an industrial heritage site, a cultural pub and a gallery. The spinning mill preserves machinery from the period between 1886 and 1900.
Tours of the Historische Spinnerei Gartetal are available by appointment; arrange a time before your visit. The schedules for the two offerings differ: the WaldbĂĽhne stages Grimm fairy tales every weekend during the summer season, while visits to the spinning mill require an appointment. This can help you choose what to focus on during your visit: a seasonal weekend programme or a tour that must be arranged in advance.
Routes Through Gleichen
The villages of Gleichen lie on the German Fairy Tale Route, also known as the Frau Holle Route, and on the German Alpine–Baltic Sea Holiday Route. The European long-distance trail from the Baltic Sea to the Adriatic is another route. These route names represent different ways of exploring: a fairy-tale route, a holiday road and a long-distance hiking trail. Gleichen is therefore part of both themed road routes and a European long-distance hiking trail.
Gleichen offers several specific starting points for planning a trip: the hills and their castle ruins, forest and rock formations, archaeological traces, views from the lookout tower, and cultural offerings available seasonally or by appointment. What shapes your stay depends on whether you want to focus on the landscape, history or a particular visitor attraction.
