Duderstadt offers several distinct ways to plan a stay focused on architectural history and city walks: the half-timbered houses in the old town, a former city gate with an interactive exhibit, historic rooms in the town hall and a night watchman tour. There is also a cycling tour and a hike, each with its own stops. If you are looking for accommodation in Duderstadt, you can choose your destination based on whether architecture, stories of the city’s past or a route into the surrounding area is your main focus.

Half-timbered houses, a church and different periods in history

The historic old town is characterised by more than 600 colourful half-timbered houses from different periods. The townscape therefore cannot be attributed to just one period of construction. St. Servatius Church offers a particularly tangible insight into the history of architecture: it was built in the Late Gothic style between around 1370 and 1520. The Creutzburg organ was added later and completed in 1735. The church thus brings together architectural and organ history from different periods.

The south portal of St. Servatius Church is generally open to visitors daily from 9 am to 6 pm. Opening hours may change, so check the details before your visit. A visit can be easily combined with a walk through the old town, whose more than 600 half-timbered houses from different periods shape the townscape.

Westerturm, the town hall and stories of the city’s past

Westerturm is a landmark of Duderstadt. As a former city gate, it is part of the town’s medieval fortification system, along with its watchtowers, rampart and wall. At its interactive exhibit, visitors can learn more about medieval town defences and the Duderstadt Marksmen’s Society. The tower thus connects a section of the town’s fortifications with a hands-on way to explore its history.

The historic town hall houses the old council wine cellar, a torture chamber and other exhibition areas. The night watchman tour offers a different way to explore the historic sights: it leads through the old town’s lantern-lit streets and shares anecdotes, stories and interesting facts. While the exhibit in Westerturm focuses on town defences and the Marksmen’s Society, the tour explores the city’s history through several sights and stories. If you plan to join the tour, check the current dates.

Cycling and hiking routes with different stops

An official circular cycling route runs from Duderstadt via Westerode and Mingerode to the Gut Herbigshagen Nature Experience Centre. A hike offers different points of interest: it starts at the historic town hall, passes the Eichsfeld Borderland Museum and Gut Herbigshagen, and ends back in the historic streets of Duderstadt’s old town. Gut Herbigshagen is the destination of the cycling tour; the hike also includes the Borderland Museum and returns to the old town. The two options therefore differ not only in their mode of transport, but also in their listed stops and final destination.

Sulbergwarte lies nearby. It can be reached from Duderstadt via field paths and offers a remarkable panoramic view, particularly of Duderstadt and the Eichsfeld region. This makes it possible to choose between the history of the old town and a viewpoint in the surrounding area based on your interests, without treating Sulbergwarte as a sight in the old town.

Getting there and a separate look at Göttingen

Duderstadt can be reached via the A7 and A38 motorways. This information provides guidance for your journey; it does not specify a travel time or distance. If you would also like to explore the wider destination of Göttingen, you will find other distinct cultural and nature-related points of interest there.

At the Forum Wissen in Göttingen, visitors gain insights into current research and teaching. The permanent exhibition “Spaces of Knowledge” covers 1,400 square metres and explains how knowledge is created. Its twelve rooms contain more than 1,400 objects from the collections of the University of Göttingen. The Göttingen Municipal Museum has been housed in Hardenberger Hof, the last surviving aristocratic palace in Göttingen, since 1897. Until further notice, it is showing the exhibition “City. Power. Faith. Göttingen in the 16th Century”; check the latest exhibition information before visiting. Guided tours of the permanent and current special exhibitions are available for groups and school classes. Check the booking arrangements in advance. Another distinct facet of Göttingen is the Old Botanical Garden: it was founded in 1736 as a “hortus medicus”, or medicinal garden. Visitors can explore its historic greenhouses, tropical vegetation in the rainforest house and the Alpine garden.
