Wilsche brings together local history, a short cycling connection to Gifhorn and various aviation sports. It also features the Stork Route and Erikasee Lake, located on the edge of the district. This makes for a travel destination that combines cultural history, cycling and air sports; the individual highlights differ in subject and scale.

Local History and Landscape

Wilsche’s local history includes the Wilsche memorial stone, the 1692 border dispute, the legend of the dwarves in Schalksberg and the former Wilsche mill. These topics are distinct: the border dispute is associated with a specific year, the legend belongs to oral tradition, and the memorial stone and former mill are other concrete points of reference. Anyone interested in local history when choosing a travel destination will find more than a single historical episode here.

The location details also provide different points of reference: Wilsche Airfield lies north of the village and is surrounded by fields and pine forests. Erikasee Lake is on the edge of the Wilsche district. This makes it possible to consider these two landscape features separately, without treating them as one and the same place.

Cycling Routes on Different Scales

The 1.8-kilometre cycling path connects Wilsche and Gifhorn; it was officially opened on 12 April 2023. The Gifhorn Stork Route is a separate attraction: it is a circular cycling tour of around 62 kilometres that passes through Wilsche on its way to Müden (Aller). Along the route, you can see five stork nests; a sign at each nest provides information about the stork chicks that have hatched and fledged.

The two cycling options differ both in length and in format: one is a short connection between Wilsche and Gifhorn, while the other is a longer circular tour focused on a specific nature theme. The signs at the nests give the Stork Route an additional point of interest, while the 1.8-kilometre path primarily connects the two named places. These are different scales for travel planning and should not be thought of as a single tour.

Aviation Sports in Wilsche

Flights for training, thermal and cross-country flying through the Lüneburg Heath, and aerobatics take off from Wilsche Airfield. This encompasses several types of aviation sport: training flights, thermal and cross-country flying, and aerobatics. Together with its location north of the village and its surroundings of fields and pine forests, the airfield offers a distinct focus alongside local history and cycling.

More Highlights in the Wider Gifhorn Destination

Other cultural and urban highlights add their own character to the wider Gifhorn destination. The International Wind and Watermill Museum Gifhorn showcases historic mills from various countries and brings traditional craftsmanship to life. Built in the 16th century, Welfenschloss sits on the northern edge of the district town of Gifhorn, between Schlosssee Lake and the Ise River; it is surrounded by wide moats. Gifhorn’s Schlosssee Lake is centrally located in the city centre, between the castle and the mill museum.

Gifhorn’s architectural history also offers points of reference from different periods: the Old Gifhorn Town Hall was built in 1562 and served as the town hall until 1843/44. St. Nicolai Church on Gifhorn’s market square is a Protestant Baroque church dating from 1733 to 1744. Gifhorn’s weekly market offers a different way to explore the area, with changing regional and seasonal goods on Wednesdays and Saturdays; exceptions may apply on public holidays.
