Groß Oesingen brings together two distinct themes for a stay: the history of its churches and the Ummern–Oesingen Experience Loop cycling route. Several historical dates converge at the Friedenskirche; the cycling route loops around Groß Oesingen and Ummern and offers places to rest as well as information boards. When planning your visit, the first question is therefore whether you would like to focus on local history, local festival traditions or a bike tour.

Churches and local history

The Friedenskirche in Groß Oesingen was consecrated on 10 October 1880. Its winged altar and pulpit date from before the Thirty Years’ War; the Furtwängler organ was purchased in 1879. The history of the altar and pulpit therefore reaches back well beyond the date the church was consecrated. A second story of consecration belongs to the Immanuels-Kirche: Theodor Harms consecrated it in 1879. The Immanuels congregation developed in Groß Oesingen after members left the regional church and joined a free church. Together, the two churches offer different points of historical interest: older furnishings, consecration dates and the development of a congregation.

Festivals and local traditions

The festival traditions also have their own distinctive character. The annual mission festivals held by the two churches have gained regional significance thanks to the participation of their respective trombone choirs. The three-day folk festival of the Groß Oesingen Schützengilde has been held annually since 1653, though with interruptions. Thus, church festivals featuring trombone choirs sit alongside a multi-day folk festival. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the specific dates for your travel period in advance.

Exploring by bike

The Ummern–Oesingen Experience Loop was established in 2025 and runs as a cycling route around Groß Oesingen and Ummern. Rest stops and information boards about nature and notable buildings are located along the entire route. This lets you combine breaks with information about the route’s themes. Cars can be parked near the Mühlenplatz in Groß Oesingen to start the ride. If you would like to begin there, check local parking conditions before setting off.

The wider area: the overarching destination of Gifhorn

The wider destination of Gifhorn opens up another level of planning. Gifhorn district encompasses heathland, forests, moorland, rivers and lakes. The district also includes the Drömling UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. For cyclists, the scale of the regional network offers a different point of comparison from a single loop: the district’s cycling network comprises around 700 kilometres of recreational cycle paths, plus around 550 kilometres of everyday routes, including connecting paths. The Experience Loop is a specific cycling route around Groß Oesingen and Ummern; the district figures give an overview of the scale and different types of routes in the regional network.

The wider destination of Gifhorn is also home to the International Wind and Watermill Museum Gifhorn. It has 13 full-size mills from around the world. The village square on the grounds is freely accessible to all visitors. If you would like to include this place in your plans, check the access arrangements before your visit.
