Ehra-Lessien offers several distinct starting points for planning an excursion: Bickelstein, an Ice Age erratic boulder; a 22-kilometer cycling tour; and a 450-meter bird trail. This gives you a choice of different route lengths and themes. If you are interested in cycling and places steeped in legend, you will find a different perspective here than on the short trail devoted to birdlife.

Bickelstein: Erratic Boulder and Local Landmark

Bickelstein is located in the Bickelsteiner Heide woodland. The Ice Age erratic boulder, made of reddish granite, is 2.5 meters long and 1.2 meters high; it bears horseshoe- and cross-like markings. As a landmark of the municipality of Ehra-Lessien, the stone is a distinctive local feature. It is considered the best-known erratic boulder in the Gifhorn-Wolfsburg area. Its geological classification, dimensions and described markings provide specific points of interest for visitors interested in erratic boulders and local landmarks.

Cycling Tour and Bird Trail

The 22-kilometer, nature-oriented legends and history trail is a cycling route around Ehra-Lessien that leads to places steeped in legend and history. It combines cycling with themes from folklore and history. The 450-meter bird trail offers a different focus: it begins at the entrance to Bickelstein and is devoted to birdlife. The two trails differ both in length and in theme. This lets you decide whether a longer cycling tour to various places or the short bird trail is a better fit for your excursion.

Planning Information

Parking is available at Bickelstein, and a circular route starts there, heading east. Since parking availability may change, it is best to check the current situation before setting out. A cycling map of Ehra-Lessien is available free of charge from the Ehra-Lessien municipal administration. Check collection options in advance if you would like to use the map for your tour.

In the Wider Gifhorn Destination

The district of Gifhorn includes heathland, forests, moorland, rivers and lakes. The district is also home to the Drömling, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This varied regional landscape provides a broader context for planning your trip, while the trails and erratic boulder described here are specific to Ehra-Lessien.

For cycling in the district of Gifhorn, there are around 700 kilometers of recreational cycling routes, plus around 550 kilometers of everyday cycling routes with connecting paths. Around 400 signposted junctions can be combined to plan your own route. Culture is also part of the wider Gifhorn destination: the International Wind and Watermill Museum in Gifhorn features 13 full-size, original mills from around the world. This offers further regional themes alongside the places steeped in legend and history in Ehra-Lessien, without equating them with the local trails.
