Hooksiel offers a variety of discoveries: water sports on the North Sea beach and at Hooksmeer, maritime traces in the town center and at the Old Harbor, and contemporary art. To plan your visit, you can sort these offerings by interest: the Hooksmeer walk is an easy hiking route measuring 3.88 kilometers; the Wangerland Pilgrimage Route is a cycling route with a connection to churches. The Shell Museum adds a natural history perspective, with specimens from the North Sea and around the world.

Water and Trails at Hooksmeer

The North Sea beach in Hooksiel offers opportunities for surfing, kitesurfing and sailing. Nearby Hooksmeer has water-skiing activities and an aqua park. Hooksmeer itself is an inland lake of around 60 hectares near Hooksiel. The walking path runs alongside wooded shores, small coves and sailboats. A lock connecting it to the outer harbor keeps the lake independent of the ebb and flow of the tides.

The Hooksmeer walk is an easy hiking route measuring 3.88 kilometers. This presents water-based activities and a clearly defined walking distance as different options. If you are more interested in activity along the shore, the walking path offers the landscape views mentioned above; if you are looking for water sports, you can consider the activities at the beach and Hooksmeer as separate highlights.

The Anchor Trail and the Old Harbor

The Hooksiel Anchor Trail features historic anchors of different sizes and origins along the route. It leads through the historic town center, past restored buildings, small galleries and cafés. Here, anchors and the townscape come together along a single route, so the maritime traces are not limited to individual exhibits.

The Old Harbor in Hooksiel is a listed historic site. It is home to an old customs house, a warehouse and one of the last working sluice pumping stations. Typical maritime objects such as sea buoys, a pilot tower and a mud boat can be seen in the harbor basin. The Anchor Trail and the harbor offer two different ways to explore maritime history: along the trail, through historic anchors and the town center; at the harbor, through buildings and objects associated with shipping.

The Shell Museum and Contemporary Art

The Hooksiel Shell Museum displays the smallest and largest shells and snails, as well as specimens from the North Sea and from around the world. The range of sizes and the variety of origins offer two specific perspectives on the collection. The museum is accessible and can be visited by wheelchair users. Guided tours are available on request.

The Hooksiel Artists’ House dedicates its exhibition and event program to presenting contemporary art. Alongside the natural history specimens at the Shell Museum, visitors can therefore see changing exhibitions and events focused on contemporary art. As individual exhibitions change, it is advisable to check the current program before your visit.

Cycling the Pilgrimage Route

The Wangerland Pilgrimage Route is a culturally rich cycling route that passes Hooksiel along well-signposted paths. Along the way, you can visit 14 churches: twelve Protestant and two Catholic. The Pilgrimage Route therefore offers a different focus from the Hooksmeer walk: here, the emphasis is on a cycling route connected with churches, while the walk follows an easy hiking route by an inland lake. The two routes can be distinguished by their respective modes of travel and themes.

More Things to Discover in Wangerland

In the wider Wangerland destination, the Wangerland National Park House is located in Minsen. Its roughly 250 m² of exhibition space offers multimedia ways to actively experience and discover the Wadden Sea; the exhibition also covers renewable energy and climate protection. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.

Other places in Wangerland have their own distinctive highlights. The beach in Horumersiel is a green beach with soft grass right by the North Sea, making it an alternative to a sandy beach. At Wangermeer in Hohenkirchen, various hiking trails invite you to take longer walks and enjoy varied views of the lake’s natural surroundings. A large, round island in the middle of Wangermeer can be reached on foot or by bicycle via a 325-meter-long promenade bridge.
