At high tide, you can swim at the beach in Dangast; at low tide, mudflat hiking begins in the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site. Coastal activities therefore depend on the tides. If you are looking for accommodation in Varel, it helps to first choose the focus of your stay: the Wadden Sea and tides, trails through varied landscapes, or culture and city history.

Wadden Sea, trails and forests

Well-maintained trails run along the dyke in Dangast, making it possible to cycle and hike through marshland, moorland and geest. If you are planning a visit to the water, take the tides into account; low tide is essential for mudflat hiking. The trails offer a different focus: here, cycling and hiking through the different landscape types take centre stage.

The Dangast National Park House is located in Friesland, in the old village school at the entrance to Dangast. Its 500-square-metre exhibition covers the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park and Jade Bay. Its themes include aquariums, a seal colony display and a children’s area. The centre offers guided mudflat walks and hands-on tours for children. Public guided tours take place regularly; group and school class events are held year-round by individual arrangement. Check the current public schedule before your visit.

The Varel Forest is home to the approximately 2.7-kilometre-long Jungeholz Forest Discovery Trail. Illustrated information boards there cover forest management and tree species. The circular hike through the moorland in Varel offers a different thematic focus: it leads through the moorland around Jethausen, Büppel and Varel Forest. Stops along the way cover the development of the moor and the water tower. While the Forest Discovery Trail focuses on woodland and tree species, the circular hike connects several landscape sections around the theme of moorland.

Varel Water Tower is a 50.5-metre-high observation tower with views over Varel and Jade Bay, and sometimes as far as Butjadingen. Adventure Golf Dangast, for its part, draws on local themes: its courses depict landmarks, art, culture and life in the Wadden Sea around Dangast and Varel.

City history and art

The Varel Local History Museum presents 900 years of city history in an interactive exhibition across three floors. Varel Castle Church offers a different historical perspective: it is the city’s oldest building, traditionally dated to 1144. Its furnishings by Ludwig Münstermann include an altar, baptismal font, pulpit, angels and a prayer bench.

In the Friesland travel destination, the Franz Radziwill House is located in the artists’ village of Dangast. It preserves the artist’s original home and studio and is one of the few artists’ houses in the world to remain in its original condition. In changing exhibitions, the house displays more than 800 paintings, watercolours and drawings.

Harbour life and local themes

The quay at Varel Harbour is lined with restaurants, cafés and shops, including several fish restaurants. In Dangast, fresh crabs are available directly from fishing boats in the harbour. Together with the tide-dependent coast, forest and moorland trails, and museums, these offer different ways to plan your trip: nature and mudflats, art and history, or a look at harbour life and fish restaurants.
